DAVID LEROY MARTIN 1930 2013 On Tuesday, August 27, 2013, after a lengthy illness Dave crossed peacefully into the arms of Jesus. Now that his earthly suffering has ended, his wife, Marguerite, his two sons Dowie and Robert, daughter Jacqueline, his six grandsons, and many other relatives rejoice in knowing that he has begun a new life of eternal love and well being. Dave was the son of a First World War infantry man who survived the historical battle of Vimy Ridge. It is during his dad's employment with the Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan that he was born. The family moved back to Grahamdale, Manitoba when he was two years old. He grew into a rugged farm boy with a fascination for all things mechanical. As a young man, he joined the Canadian Militia's engineering unit (RCEME), where he achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. Dave was a heat treater for most of his working life beginning with Bristol Aerospace, after which he helped found Winnipeg Heat Treating which he managed until his retirement in 1987. He then divided most of his spare time between The Vintage Locomotive Society and his home workshop. Dave was a quiet, unassuming, devoted family man. He also especially valued the many friends and great experiences afforded him at The Prairie Dog Central Railway. Nothing made him happier than to rocket' down the rails while standing at the controls of that magnificent old train which he lovingly helped maintain for over a quarter century. In keeping with his wishes the family will lay him to rest at a private ceremony at a later date. Many thanks to the staff at the St. Boniface Palliative Care unit for their kindness while he was in their care. If so desired donations to The Winnipeg Humane Society or The Vintage Locomotive Society in Dave's memory would be greatly appreciated.
