GILDA MARIE PORCO (CANTAFIO) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, sister, sister-in-law, Nonna and aunt on Monday, September 2, 2013. She was 82 years of age. Gilda was born July 24, 1931 in Transcona and had resided there all her life. Her work began at Canada West Shoe Factory then with Rogan and Lawrence Furriers. She later worked at the Hudson Bay Co. downtown until her retirement in 1991. Gilda married Gabriele Porco, the love of her life, on September 12, 1953. Gilda's life revolved around her family and the many friends she made along the way. Gilda's rich Italian heritage was evident in her traditions and baking and cooking she did over the years. Gilda loved to bake and was a kind, loving, nurturing and giving person always with a smile on her face. Always thought of others first. Whenever she went to visit a friend she never went empty handed. She always brought some of her homemade goods or a loaf of her homemade bread. Gilda also loved knitting and crocheting. She would bring these items, along with her baking, to the Transcona Senior Centre where she and Gabriele attended every week. Gilda loved to play bingo at the senior centre too. Gilda self-taught to read and write Italian. With this she helped many Italians who immigrated to Canada and came to live in Transcona have an easy transition. Gilda was loved and respected for her kind and giving nature by everyone who knew her and was a true friend to all. Predeceased by her parents Antonia and Francesco Cantafio; sister Mattea Altomare; brothers-in-law Carmine Altomare, Tony and Frank Porco, and sister-in-law Rosina (Giovanni) Altomare of Italy. Gilda leaves to mourn her beloved husband Gabriele Porco, of 60 years; daughters Roseanna (Harry) Bakema, Gina (Renato) Calesso; grandson Christopher Calesso; sister Giovanna Eliass; brother Tommaso (Ann) Cantafio; sisters-in-law Nancy and Angela Porco and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins in Winnipeg, Vancouver, the US and Italy. We would like to thank the ICU staff at Concordia Hospital for their care, kind and compassionate support. Also a special thank you to our family and friends for their love and support. Funeral mass will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Parish, 710 Roanoke St. (Transcona) In memory of Gilda's kind and giving nature do something kind and good for someone else. In lieu of flowers, if friends so wish to honour Gilda's memory, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, Kidney or Diabetes.
