EVELYN SADIE MILNE (nee COURTNEY) On July 26, 2013, a wonderful lady passed away after a brief illness at Riverview Health Centre. Her husband Gordon predeceased her on August 21, 2004. Evelyn is survived by her daughter Lynda (Geoffrey), sons Lorne (Margaret) and Tony. She was a beloved Nana to her grandchildren, Matthew (Bjill), Jeremy, David, Ashley, Jordan, Taylor and Sean. Her cherished great-grandchildren are Penelope and Sawyer. Her sister-in-law, Doris Woodcock and her children, Laura, Paul (Bev) and Lois also survive her. Evelyn was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on February 10, 1924 to Ralph and Beatrice Courtney and grew up in Etzikom. Along with many of her generation, Evelyn enlisted in the R.C.A.F. Women's Division. After training in Canada, she served at 6 Group Headquarters, Bomber Command in Yorkshire England and there made several lifelong friendships. It was at a Halloween Dance at R.A.F. Dishforth in Yorkshire, that Evelyn met Gordon Milne who, having done a tour, was training new Lancaster pilots. That first dance was the beginning of a 58-year loving relationship. After the end of the war, Ev and Gord returned to Canada and were married in Medicine Hat, Alberta in 1946. After a short honeymoon, they moved to Winnipeg. Evelyn enjoyed summers at Moose Lake and subsequently Winnipeg Beach where she spent many happy times with family and friends. She was a member of Pembina Curling Club and continued her interest as an avid armchair curling fan all her life. Gord and Ev travelled extensively to many lovely places with friends and family, but always looked forward to coming home. After Gordon passed away in 2004, Evelyn moved into Dakota House where she made many new friends. Evelyn cherished her friendships, both old and new, and was very happy being part of the Dakota House family. We would like to express our gratitude to Dr. and Mrs. R. Hayward, all the staff at CancerCare Manitoba, Victoria Hospital Oncology, the W.R.H.A. Palliative Care team, and 3E Riverview Health Centre for their compassionate care of Evelyn and her family. A celebration of our Mom's life will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at The United Church in Meadowood, 1111 Dakota St., Winnipeg MB. The family gratefully declines flowers, but if desired, a donation could be made to the Riverview Health Centre, (1 Morley Ave., Winnipeg, Manitoba R3L 2P4) or Agape Table (P.O. Box 26111, Maryland, RPO, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3G 3R3). A donation in Evelyn's memory to a charity of your choice would also be appreciated. • So sorry to hear of Evelyn's passing. We met and befriended many years ago and became reacquainted when we all lived at Dakota House together. Evelyn was a kind and generous individual and we'll always remember her. Bob and Helen Cochrane - Posted by: Bob & Helen Cochrane (Friends) on: Sep 08, 2013

  • My Mother, Christina Anderson, also lived at Dakota House. She considered Evelyn a very dear friend. My Mom enjoyed Chinese dinners in Evelyn's suite, along with Thelma. I met Evelyn on the bus to South Beach. She was a wonderful lady. My Mother passed last month, so on her behalf, along with my family, our deepest sympathy to all her loved ones. - Posted by: Beverley Collins (Friend) on: Sep 07, 2013

  • In 2008 it was my distinct pleasure to meet, interview, and photograph Evelyn about her service experiences during World War II. She was a forthright and fascinating subject, presenting her story in a dignified and understated way. I'm so grateful to her for this opportunity she provided to a stranger. Her deep love of family was also evident; while most of the images I made of her show her serious faced and wearing her service badges on her dark blazer, my favorite image is of her holding a teddy bear with its t-shirt saying," You can't hug your children too much." She is in my heart. - Posted by: Shirley Grosser (Acquaintance) on: Sep 07, 2013
