SOPHIE MORWICK On September 5, 2013, Sophie Morwick, aged 83, passed away peacefully in Teulon, MB, surrounded by her family. Fiercely independent, strong-willed, and intensely private, Sophie lived life on her own terms. A long-time wildlife enthusiast who loved birds and flowers, she would often go camping by herself to enjoy the peace and quiet of nature. A sometimes gruff and stoic exterior belied a kind and generous heart. Known for her beautiful singing voice, Sophie was modest about all her accomplishments. Her friends and family were often recipients of her exquisite petit point needlework, with compliments self-consciously brushed aside. A life-long parishioner of the Notre Dame Catholic Church in Selkirk, she was a member of the Catholic Women's League (CWL) and often on the parish council. Sophie believed strongly in her faith, saying her prayers every night with her beloved husband's rosary. She never liked a fuss made over her and always wanted to do everything herself. In her last year, she built a new network of friends, charming her Home Care "ladies" with stories of her youthful (mis)adventures, time spent in the air force, and love of her family. Special thanks to the brigade of women who helped Sophie last as long as she did. Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Michael Loudon and the nursing staff at Teulon Hospital. Their exceptional compassion and kindness towards Sophie made her end-of-life journey a comfortable and peaceful experience. A Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. in the Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church with Fr. Stan Gacek officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • She was not Sophie to me..... She was mom and I've thought about her so often! I was a best friend of Denise growing up and when my daughters and I went back to Selkirk "mom" was always one of the people I made sure we went to visit. They still remember her and she would love to see them. My youngest daughters middle name is Denise in memory of my friend and I think she loved that. I would never tell her I was coming and just show up at the door. The surprise and delight in her face was so much fun to see! I still remember her screaming at the door. It usually took a couple minutes before it opened and we came in. LOL. Can't forget watching her roll her own cigarettes! And her laugh..... I haven't been back in a long time but I always knew when I finally got there she was on the top of my list to see. I'm so sorry I won't get that chance again but I know she's with her husband and Denise and watching over all of us. LOVE YOU MOM!!!.... you son of a gun :) - Posted by: Tania Boresky Kaiser () on: Nov 10, 2013
