Date of Passing: Sep 28, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCLIFFORD SIDNEY RAFFEY October 22, 1925 September 28, 2013 It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Clifford Sidney Raffey on September 28 at the Meadowood Manor Personal Care Home. Predeceased by his parents Sidney and Gladys and his brother Leonard; he will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 64 years Lillian Marie Raffey, sons Bob, Rick (Sherry) and Kerry; grandchildren Shannon, Brandy (Jeremy), Matt, Tim (Erin), Carly (Jason), Scott (Mellisa) and Nick; and great-grandchildren Keeley and Emma. Cliff spent his early years in Transcona and then the family moved to south Winnipeg. He joined the CNR and worked there until he enlisted in the RCAF in 1943 and was posted to England. After the war he returned to work with the railroad and not long after that he was introduced to Lillian on a blind date set up by Hazel and Ed Lane. They were married in May 1949. He worked for the CN for 39 years as a brakeman and conductor and retired in 1983. After retiring, Cliff played a little golf, did some gardening, chauffeured his family around and shared a few stories with John Sutherland and Bill Maxwell. He and Lillian now had time to explore the world and made two trips to Europe, one to Hawaii and took annual winter vacations down south. Cliff was an avid sports fan and had season tickets to the Bombers and the Jets. He and Lillian were regulars at their children's and grandchildren's hockey, football, baseball and soccer games and many other events. They started attending Bomber games back in the 1950s at the old Osborne Stadium. He was also a volunteer for several years at Riverview Community Centre and eventually served as President in the early 1970s. He had a keen sense of humour and he loved the old British television comedies. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion since 1948 and attended his last meeting earlier this year to receive his 65 year pin. Cliff was the perfect family man. He loved having everyone visit and he especially loved the family dinners when we all gathered for Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years and birthdays. He also loved dogs. There was always a dog at the house on Baltimore Road and he always enjoyed having the family pets come to visit. A memorial service for Cliff will be held on Friday, October 4, 2013 at Thomson "In The Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. at 2:00 p.m. The service will be conducted by Cliff's niece, Bev Ward. We would like to thank the staff at the Meadowood Manor for their kindness and care during his time there. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society: 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3 or any charity of your choice.
