MARGARET ELIZABETH (BETTY) GEDDES July 18, 1917 - October 5, 2013 Margaret Elizabeth (Betty) Geddes passed away on October 5, 2013 at Pembina Place Personal Care Home. Daughter of the late William C. Wilde and Ethel (Hawes) Wilde, and predeceased by her husband Jack, and brothers Gerald and Norman. She is survived by her daughter Allison Challes (Gordon), son Murray and her grandsons Michael, Stephen, and Andrew. Betty was employed by the Canadian Wheat Board for many years, and was a supervisor in the I.B.M. department when she left to be married. Later, she went back to school and entered the teaching profession. She spent many enjoyable years teaching Grade 2 at General Byng School in Fort Garry. One of the great highlights of Betty's life was in 1975 when she and her daughter went to England, Scotland and Denmark to take part in Comparative Education courses offered by the University of Manitoba. Betty was most appreciative of the fact that she was able to stay in her own home until the age of 94. This was due in large part to the efforts of her son Murray and her neighbour Ron who took care of all of the outside chores for many years, and her inside helpers Janice and Terry. Betty's interest and appreciation of her grandsons' accomplishments in music, academic achievements and sports knew no bounds. Up until these past few years, she also enjoyed the summers spent with her grandsons on the Crescent Drive golf course, where (as she put it) their golf scores continued to improve while hers continued to soar in the wrong direction. Her grandsons enjoyed their Wednesday lunches with Grandma and the whole family looked forward to our Sunday dinners together. Betty cherished the many phone calls she shared with her many friends and relatives in Winnipeg, Regina, Montreal, Ottawa, Boston, California and Scotland. She also enjoyed the frequent visits from her dear friend Pat during the last few years. The family would like to express appreciation to all of the caregivers and support staff at Deer Lodge, Misericordia Interim Care, Seven Oaks Hospital and Pembina Place who have helped care for Betty during the last two years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 1101-191 Lombard Ave., Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3B 0X1 or to a charity of one's choice. There will be a graveside service, Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Waverley Memorial Gardens, 1501 Waverley St. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Growing up with Betty's daughter Allison, I would spend many Sunday dinners at their home on Jessie. I remember sharing many stories with the family, about my many world travels in Southeast Asia and during my teaching years in Northern Manitoba. She always encouraged me to write these stories down and perhaps publish some of the more interesting ones. I have never pursued this, but now in her memory I will begin this process. She was so interested in many things, was well read, and I enjoyed having many conversations with her about her life. She will be missed. I regret not spending much time with her in her later years as I have lived up north with my husband and children. Condolences to Allison, Gordon, Murray, and the boys. • Betty was a dear friend of mine. We met at University and attended classes together, played golf and generally had like interests. Age intervened with our golf and other activities but we still were able to keep our friendship alive playing games, talking on the phone and enjoying what our incapacities would permit us to do. Betty inspired me to write two books about my husband and myself for our children. I will miss this dear friend of mine very much, more than I can say. My deepest sympathy to her family.
