ROGER PTOSNICK Roger Ptosnick passed away peacefully on October 12, 2013 at the St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 92, with his loving wife Pauline, by his side. He is survived by sister Mary-Jo (Don), brother Frank (Darlene); children Randy (Marlen), Judy, Donna (Wayne); stepchildren Susie, Carol, Alfred, Susan, and Trish (Greg), along with 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by Ida, Freda, brother Tony and stepson Bill. Roger enlisted in the Canadian Army at the age of 20, serving with the armoured regiment, Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians) as a dispatch rider in Britain, Italy, France, Germany, and Holland during the Second World War. After the war, he started his own plastering and stucco company. Later he worked making artificial marble tops, then as an ice-maker and maintenance man at Dutton Arena, St. John's-Ravenscourt School. During his working career and retirement years, he worked tirelessly for the Royal Canadian Legion in numerous capacities. He enjoyed speaking to school children and youth groups about the roles that Canadian service personnel had during the wars. He was the Manitoba correspondent for the Legion magazine for 23 years. He was actively involved in the maintenance of the Legion's athletic camp at the International Peace Garden and was honoured with a lifetime membership. He received the Meritorious Service Medal and Palm Leaf, the highest honour given to an outstanding Legion member. He was a member for 60 years. More recently, he was honoured when he received the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal. The greatest tribute you could pay Roger would be to observe a minute of silence, wear a poppy or attend a memorial service every Remembrance Day. The family thanks his doctors and staff at the Medical Intensive Care Unit at St. Boniface Hospital, and the many friends who provided support. A memorial service celebrating Roger's life will be held on October 28 at 1:00 p.m. at the Fort Garry Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 90, 1125 Pembina Hwy., Winnipeg, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

Condolences & Memories (21 entries)

  • As a young boy growing up in Winnipeg I was fortunate to attend SJR 1968-1976. During the early years I learned to play hockey at Dutton Arena. I remember with fondness the dedicated work Roger did in making sure that the Arena was well maintained and operated in a professional manner. He always took the time to ensure the safety of all hockey players by running a wonderful rink. My condolences to all of the family. - Posted by: Bill Shaddy (Hockey Player) on: Jan 22, 2014

  • I have so many wonderful memories of visits with my Uncle Roger over the years, which typically occurred when he was on his way to or from the International Peace Gardens. The things that I will remember the most about him will be his great smile, his deep and jovial laugh, and the twinkle in his eye when he was joking around. Randy, Judy and Donna - please accept my sincere condolences for your loss. Your dad was a great man, and a great uncle to me and my sister. - Posted by: Marcia (Ptosnick) Finlayson (niece) on: Oct 28, 2013

  • I met Roger earlier this year when I became a Director on the International Peace Gardens Legion Athletic Camp Committee. I had heard such great things about Roger through his step-daughter, Susan Jenkins with whom I have been friends for years, and I quickly found that all I had been told was extremely accurate. In such a short time Roger and I became good friends -I came to refer to him as 'My cute little man' and he referred to me as 'A fire cracker'. I often called Roger 'Dad' as he reminded me very much of my late Father - kind, determined, loyal, humorous and extremely generous. It was Roger who encouraged me to join Legion #90 as well as the Athletic Committee and I am proud that I did and I hope that I can contribute as much as he did. Roger's passion for, and dedication to, the Legion Athletic Camp has spanned many decades. When he talked of the camp he did so with such fervor and warmth. His main objective was ALWAYS what was best for the kids and maintaining a camp where all kids, regardless of economic background, could enjoy their experience and benefit from the camp experience and outstanding coaching in all sports. Along with other Committee Directors I intend on continuing to work hard and see that the camp continues to be a success and to build it back up to its former glory. I will always fondly remember Roger and am thankful that I was a part of his life - even though for too short a time - and that I had the opportunity to call him my friend. My deepest condolences to Roger's families and specially to Pauline - you were his rock Pauline. God Bless. - Posted by: Patti Adams (Friend and Committee colleague of Roger and Pauline) on: Oct 28, 2013

  • I have had the pleasure of knowing Roger and Pauline personally since I visited them back in 2007 to do research on Roger's wartime unit, the Lord Strathcona's Horse. Over the course of the night the three of us stayed up well past one a.m. and probably could have continued longer if it wasn't for this "young pup" having to get up early the next morning. The warmth and hospitality shown was incredible and I will remember it for life. Prior to meeting them in Winnipeg I had conversed with Roger by mail and talked to him numerous times over the phone, and appreciate Roger's willingness to help out at every possible opportunity. My book will be so much better for Roger's contribution and his wonderful photos! To Pauline and the extended Ptosnik family, my sincere condolences on the loss of such a fine man. I will miss him! - Posted by: Patrick Johnson (Friend of Roger and Pauline) on: Oct 28, 2013

  • My condolences to Randy, Marlen and family in the loss of your father. May he rest in peace. Thank you to your father for his contribution to our freedom and his passion to continue contributing after his army career via the camp and legion work. - Posted by: Norma Buss (Friend of Randy, Marlen) on: Oct 26, 2013

  • Our dad was very dedicated to his work with his own Plastering Co., marble company and with the Legion. As children we camped a lot, and I remember him teaching me how to wittle. I would wittle every little stick I could find. He was extremely handy building things out of wood. Each time he saw Wayne (my husband) he would always ask him, how much is the cost of ice, and skate sharpening. He would always shake his head in disbelief. He was very proud of his granddaughter Natasha and on his deathbed he said, I want to get her something special when she graduates with her masters degree as a Nurse Practioner. The day before he died, my sister Judy, her daughter Rheanan, my daughter Natasha, myself, Pauline and her daughter Susan and my dad were all joking around. It was wonderful to see everyone laughing especially the granddaughters, it is something to cherish. Thanks Dad for fighting in the war to help give our country Peace. • Our dear Comrade Roger was the epitome of the spirit and purpose of the R.C.L. that has made it the great Organization Canadians have come to respect and support. Roger was truly the progressive influence for all our members to follow and imitate. God bless and keep you in his arms. - Posted by: Cliff. Tessier Past President Man. & NW Ont. • Roger, my heart breaks when I think of a summer or fall without your visit! I was lucky enough to inherit a wonderful father in Roger, when he married my mother, Freda. I loved him like my own and he was the only "grandpa" and "great-grandpa" my children were lucky enough to have. He treated my mom with so much love and respect right until the end. He was there for her when she needed him the most and the Petrie clan all loved him for that. Roger made the trip to Vancouver Island every year to visit me and my family. He always left my home better than he found it. His dedication to always doing the best job he could, was amazing. We had many special times together and I will miss him dearly. Although I call myself his daughter, I do respect his first born family and send them my most sincere condolences. He spoke of all of you and only wanted the best for each of you. I did not know all of you well but please know your Dad was a very special man. His Vancouver Island friends and family will miss him dearly. - Posted by: Carol Petrie (Step Daughter) on: Oct 22, 2013

  • With the loss of my good friend Roger, we will have to find others to make our very helpful kitchen gadjets. Also he was the man to turn to if you had any questions re Legion protocol, and to do up our medals in such a beautiful way. I have learned to love & respect him. He has had a long and and wonderful life that he filled with joy. RIP Roger. you have earned it - Posted by: Darlene Foster-Vermette (friend) on: Oct 21, 2013

  • Roger was a director of the Royal Canadian Legion Sports Foundation which operates the Legion Athletic Camp at the International Peace Garden. He served as our building chair for many years and he arranged work parties of volunteers to complete building repairs. • Our Dad was a very hard working man and a dedicated volunteer to many different organizations. The Legion was his pride and joy evident by the many hours he spent there and his involvement in the many charities that the Legion so proudly contributed to. He also was involved with the Lord Strathcona Horse Regiment for many years, volunteer for our local Victoria Community Club, a Scout Leader, and also did a lot of charity for his church (Hope Lutheran) years ago. He owned and operated his own Plaster Company, A synthetic marble company and a vermiculite company. He finally settled in at St. John's Ravenscourt School as Head Ice Maker and Skate Sharpener until his retirement. As a family growing up he and our Mom would take us camping for weeks at a time. His handiwork with wood was pretty unique in the way he would construct a wash stand for us kids to get washed up in. He always managed to make a nice shelter as well for us to have our family meals and protect us from rain or a strong wind. Dad was never a man of many words to us but he provided the best he could for his family in his own way. He was the strong silent type of man. May you rest in peace Dad and see you in Heaven. Love your daughter Judy xo - Posted by: Judy Tyler (daughter) on: Oct 20, 2013

  • In the past couple of years we have been privileged to meet and get to know your father, Roger and his wife Pauline at your family gatherings, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. We have always felt like part of the family by being warmly welcomed to share this time with you and your father. We thought he was a very dear, proud, and sweet man. The time your father proudly invited Sarah (our Brazilian Student) to experience a Canadian Remembrance Day Ceremonies, will always be a fond memory to us, and I am sure to Sarah. He will be sadly missed ... May you find comfort in all your fond memories of a very special person. - Posted by: Randy, Marlen and Family (Neighbour/Friends) on: Oct 20, 2013

  • Roger was a customer & friend. It always brightened my day to see Roger & Pauline pull up in front of the store, coming in to purchase ribbon, drop off some books, or just for a visit because they were in the area. He will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Jaime Cline (Friend) on: Oct 19, 2013

  • I was a Correspondent to Roger when he was in charge of The Tribute paper for the Royal Canadian Legion. He was passionate on what he believed. We talked on the phone and shared many little talks about the forces and Christmas cards. I found him to be helpful with us younger members. I only met him once at a convention and talking to him in person found him quite shy. Condolences to all his family and friends. Cde Ann Okrainec, Sec. Treasurer Lac du Bonnet Legion #164. - Posted by: Ann Okrainec (Comrade of another Legion) on: Oct 19, 2013
