MURRAY WALTER ORBANSKI On Monday, October 21, 2013, Murray Orbanski of Hnausa, Manitoba, passed away in the Fisher Branch Personal Care Home at age 73. Murray was born on August 16, 1940 to Walter and Olga. He is survived by his wife Violet (nee Gillis); sons Edward (Cindy), Bruce (Laurie), Cory (Rachel) and eight grandchildren, Vincent (Melanie), Bryan (Lana), Adam, Travis, Jenna, Christopher, Kira and Kristen; four great-grandchildren Shianne, Zach, Kylee, and Suri; his brothers Lorne (Lorraine), Robert (Lara); sisters Donna (Edward), Lenore (Ross), and countless nieces and nephews. Murray worked as a self-employed contractor, spending most of his life in the far North. Some of his accomplishments include being the first to enter Churchill on the road he built, alongside the transmission line he also built. He cleared thousands of Hectares of bush for Manitoba Hydro in remote locations like South Indian Lake and Jenpeg. He built hundreds of miles of road in Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan and the Yukon Territory. He built ice dams across the Nelson River and walked heavy equipment across frozen lakes, rivers, creeks and swamps throughout the North. He earned his pilot's license at the Air Force base in Gimli in 1969 and later obtained his multi-engine and float certification logging over 2000 hours of flying time over mountains, bush and tundra. Murray spent much of the 1980s and 1990s in Alaska and the Yukon with his immediate family mining gold where, together they built and operated one of the largest placer mining processing plants in North America. Murray also loved to travel, seeing every continent but Antarctica. His travels included exotic places such as Great Britain, France, Italy, Switzerland, South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Russia, Ukraine, Australia, Thailand, Korea, Japan, Central America and Peru. He especially loved Hawaii with his family where he once landed a 310 lb. Blue Marlin. The last part of his life was the hardest but he did the best he could. The family wishes to thank the Fisher Branch Personal Care Home for their kindness and help. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at the Riverton-Hnausa Lutheran Church on Saturday, October 26 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Murray's memory to the Riverton-Hnausa Lutheran Church, Box 149, Riverton, MB, R0C 2R0.
