Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARGARET EVANGELINE (VANGIE) KUMMEN 1917 - 2013 On Saturday, October 19, 2013, Evangeline Kummen passed away peacefully at Riverview Health Centre. Special thanks to the caring staff at Riverview who made Mom's final days comfortable, surrounded by her circle of family and friends. Vangie is survived by her sons Carl (Margaret) and Bruce (Karen), eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by Harold (Bud) to whom she was devoted for 63 years of marriage, also by her son Douglas and sisters Frances McMullen and Evelyn Frizell. Evangeline was born in Winnipeg to Professor Joseph Howe and Annie Starr Chipman Howe. Educated at Mulvey and Laura Secord Schools, she helped her mother to raise her two younger nieces, earned a Batchelor of Arts degree and Diploma in Education from the University of Manitoba, taught briefly in Winnipegosis, married Bud in 1941 and served the war effort in Ottawa, returning to Winnipeg after the war. Evangeline was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She enjoyed their monthly luncheons for many years and continued to follow their activities by email. Next to her family and friends, Vangie and Bud enjoyed curling, golf and travel, and wintering in Florida. After Bud died, she continued to travel, spending the month of March in Victoria with close friend Bernice Muir, and a memorable trip to Punta Cana in 2008. Summers were spent with family at their very special retreat, the beautiful cabin she and Bud built at West Hawk Lake in 1951. She and Bud lived in their family home on Lyndale Drive for 55 years. Vangie spent recent years in the Canoe Club Assisted Living & Condos, where her quick wit and quicker laughter made her many good friends; - she rarely missed Friday night's happy hour. Flowers gratefully declined. If desired, donations to the Riverview Health Centre, One Morley Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3L 2P4, or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. Cremation has already taken place. A memorial service will be held at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 28, 2013.
