Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDR. RUNTAO HE Dr. Runtao He, 51, passed away the morning of November 2, 2013 at his home in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Runtao was born in Beijing, China on May 6, 1962, where he spent his early years. He later attended Beijing University Medical School, obtaining a degree in medicine. It was during his postgraduate training that he met his wife, Songli. He and his family immigrated to Canada in the early 1990s. He pursued and attained a PhD in microbiology. He served as a virologist for the Public Health Agency of Canada since the year 2000, publishing research in areas such as hepatitis, influenza and SARS. I knew Runtao when I was student. He gave me the opportunity to explore medicine as a career and showed me what it was to be a researcher. I am very happy to have the opportunity to have met and known him. His patience and teaching has impacted my career forever. I offer my condolences to his family and friends he left behind. - Posted by: Mark Ballard (student) on: Jan 31, 2014

I completed my PhD in the same lab as Runtao's at NML. Runtao was a unique, kind and honest scientist that I worked with during my graduate work. I am saddened by the news of his passing. Runtao will be remembered for his friendly nature, great conversations, insightfulness about research, and breadth of knowledge. My sincere condolences to his family, friends, and lab members. - Posted by: Janilyn Arsenio (Colleague) on: Nov 11, 2013

I began my working relationship with Dr. He as a student, and through his mentorship I achieved a position within his department as his lab technician. Words can barely describe the shock and sadness I felt at his passing. I am beyond grateful for him and everything he did for me. I only hope I was able to repay some small amount of that before he was gone. I regret not learning more about him and his life, and I offer my condolences to the family and friends he has left behind. - Posted by: Christine Wright (Colleague) on: Nov 10, 2013

I am very fortunate to have a chance to work with Dr He, albeit at a distance, when I was working as a medical virologist in Alberta and he was the contact and resource expert for parvovirus testing at National Microbiology Laboratory. He was always very helpful and supportive for providing best diagnostics for patient care. I am very sad to find out his passing when in fact I was trying to get in touch with him to see if he would have time to lend his expertise for a reviewer task that came to me. I didn't have the chance to meet him or his family in person and just want to commemorate great memories of him as a very supportive and helpful colleague. Please take care and my best condolence to his family and friends. - Posted by: Bonita Lee (Colleague) on: Nov 08, 2013
