ROBERT JOHN SUTTON January 23, 1936 - November 14, 2013 Surrounded by love from his family, Robert John "Bob" Sutton, passed away peacefully in Winnipeg, MB at the Riverview Health Centre on November 14, 2013. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Hazel (née Stewart) and Harvey Sutton, his brother Lawrence and nephew Randy. He will be missed by his loving wife Evelyn, and daughters; Shirley (Brian), Karen (David), and grandchildren Kirstyn, Lucas, Ryan, and Sara. Bob also leaves behind, his brother Laverne (Hazel), sister-in-law Elsie Sutton, sister-in-law Janet Makar (Ted), brother-in-law Tom Arklie (Josie), as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Bob was raised on a farm in Roland, Manitoba, and was the youngest of three boys. He loved to share many "larger than life" stories of growing up in a rural community. Bob started his education at a one-roomed school in Pomeroy and eventually graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1959. He began his teaching career in Carman, Manitoba and it was there he met Evelyn Arklie, his future wife, at a square dance. They were married on August 2, 1961. He then taught in several additional schools with the majority of his career spent at Fort Richmond Collegiate in Winnipeg. Bob was a kind man with a great sense of humour and he deeply loved his family. He never missed calling family members on their birthdays, and was always very interested to sit down and hear their latest news or gossip. No grandchild ever wanted for ice cream or chocolate, as those were always readily available at Grandpa's house. His favourite saying, "There's plenty more where that came from", was visible in his generosity to his family, to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church where he was a longtime member, and various charities he supported. Bob was a keen gardener and enjoyed sharing his harvest with family and friends. He was an animal lover with a particular fondness for cats. Searching for collectibles of various kinds was also Bob's passion. A celebration of Bob's life will be held on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, led by Reverend Martha McDowell. The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Riverview Health Centre who provided so much comfort and excellent care. The family respectfully declines flowers, but if you so desire, please make a donation to a charity of your choice in memory of Bob. Condolences & Memories (11 entries)

  • Though in our later years we did not meet often, you were remembered well. The few years we curled together were great. Evelyn and I had adventures when we worked together with 4H Clubs. Dec. 13, 2013 - Posted by: Ed Somers & Elaine Adam (Friends) on: Dec 13, 2013

  • Bob and Evelyn were a model married couple. My daughter looked forward to the Suttons on Saturday night at the old Dominion store where she worked in the bakery. Bob was a good friend -- loyal, honest, kind, compassionate and humorous. I'm sorry that we hadn't met in so many years. I knew he had health problems and was doing all the right treatments. However, it was a great shock when I heard that they were over. My heart goes out to Evelyn and family. - Posted by: Andrina Draper (Fellow Teacher) on: Nov 23, 2013

  • My deepest sympathies go out to Evelyn and the Sutton family. I was saddened to hear of "uncle Bob's passing. I have very fond memories of the time I spent with this very kind and generous family during my university years. As an out of town student I was a frequent guest when I visited with Rae and always felt welcomed. He had a great sense of humor and was always ready to give a helping hand, He will be greatly missed. Elena - Posted by: elena vertolli (former classmate of Bob's niece) on: Nov 19, 2013

  • My sincerest condolences to the family of Mr. Sutton, a favourite teacher of mine at FRC. A kind, gentle man, we always joked about the fact that he and my dad (Jack Latter, principal @ General Byng School at the time) were so often mistaken for each other, when we could not see the similarities at all! Wishing his family peace in their grief and much laughter as they recall their many happy memories. - Posted by: Carol Latter (Former Student (FRC)) on: Nov 18, 2013

  • Evelyn, my love and prayers go to you and the family. It was very special helping take care of Bob in those last few days at RHC. It's comforting to know he's home and no more pain. Love you. - Posted by: Dana (Friend) on: Nov 17, 2013

  • I remember Bob as a man of faith and I know we’ll meet him again someday. Remember “Christ was the first to be raised to life, and his people will be raised to life when he returns.” (1 Corinthians 15: 23b). - Posted by: David Ramsay (church member ) on: Nov 16, 2013

  • Bob and I taught together at FRC. For years we shared the same office space and I always enjoyed Bob's wonderful sense of humour. He found it in almost everything. I felt a great loss in hearing of Bob's passing. Our lives and the world have lost a source of laughter, compassion and a wonderful example of a Christian life. - Posted by: Norman Fullerton (Collegue) on: Nov 16, 2013

  • Very Sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Sutton. He was always one of my favorite teachers and I have great memories of his classes and him being so very kind. My sympathies to all of his family and friends. Rest In Peace Mr. Sutton - Posted by: Rosetta Troia (Former Student from FRC) on: Nov 16, 2013

  • Evelyn and family, our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Bob was a gentleman to everyone he came in contact with. The world has lost a great person. - Posted by: Trucia and Ralph Howard (Former neighbour) on: Nov 16, 2013

  • Bob was truly a good friend. Our teaching days at FRC were always relieved with Bob's wicked sense of humour. We often joked of 'going tits up' while still on the job. We thought we could just prop ourselves up at the desk and nobody would notice. Our wives would just go on cashing our cheques! We also thought we could order a couple of caskets and prop them up in a corner of the classroom. He figured we might get a good deal from Neil Bardal! Bob never forgot Lorraine's birthday, Dec. 9, for obvious reasons. We will miss him very much. Our sincere condolences to you and your family Evelyn. - Posted by: Bill and Lorraine Helgason (friends) on: Nov 16, 2013

  • My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, Shirley. - Posted by: Pat Weiss (Friend) on: Nov 16, 2013
