MAXINE CECILE ROMANIUK (nee WAWRYKOW) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maxine Romaniuk, dearly loved wife, mom, grandma, sister, auntie, cousin, and friend on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at the age of 72. Mom will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 47 years, Bill; son Alan (Michel); daughter Liana (Brad); son Russ (Shelly); son Derek (Sue); grandchildren Nolan, Mallory, Jane, Samson, Zak, Steffi and Christopher; her brother Tony, his children Ashley, Paul, Heather, and his grandchildren Payton and Hudson, as well as many other members of the Wawrykow and Bydak families. She will also be dearly missed by her lifelong friends Mabel, Pat, Evelyn and Chris. Mom was predeceased by her mother Katherine in 1953, and her father Max in 1977. Mom was born on May 5, 1941 in Winnipeg and grew up on Scotia Street in West Kildonan. From an early age she was passionate about studying and playing the piano. She participated in many recitals and music festivals where she received numerous awards and much recognition for her talent. Mom and her family were active members of St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church where she was involved with Ukrainian dancing and the youth group. After losing her mother at the age of 12 she helped to raise her younger brother Tony, took on many new responsibilities in her household, and formed very special relationships with her aunts, uncles and cousins who lived nearby. Mom also remembered many family car trips taken with her father and brother during this time in her life. Mom attended Governor Semple and Victory Schools and then graduated in 1958 from West Kildonan Collegiate. After finishing high school her family moved to Brewster Bay in Transcona where mom lived for the rest of her life. Upon receiving her post-secondary training she went on to work as an executive secretary for C.P. Rail. During these years mom loved spending time with her family and friends; she had fond memories of summer days at the beach, adventurous trips to Toronto and California, and she became known for hosting festive get-togethers at her home. In 1964 mom and dad met on a blind date and they were married two years later on July 30, 1966. She stayed with her job at C.P. Rail until shortly before the birth of Alan in 1967. Mom and dad then welcomed Liana in 1969, Russ in 1970, and completed their family with the birth of their son Derek on November 16, 1972. She was a wonderful stay-at-home mom, working tirelessly to provide a loving and nurturing home for her family, and for the rest of her life she put the interests of her loved ones before her own. Whether it was dad, her children, her grandchildren, or her brother, mom unselfishly gave us her time and energy and was always available whenever we needed her. Mom enjoyed the simple things in life. She was most happy being at home, cooking and baking for her family, doing crosswords or jigsaw puzzles, tending to her garden and flowers, and chatting with her neighbours over the fence. Mom was an avid sports fan and, in addition to attending her children's and grandchildren's sporting activities, she loved watching Bombers games, curling, figure skating, and just about any other sport on TV. Kildonan Park was always a special place for mom and she treasured her times spent there in childhood and throughout the rest of her life. Family picnics in the park and Mother's Day drives to Lockport with her children and grandchildren were her favourite outings, and her Ukrainian Christmas Eve dinners brought the whole family together and will be remembered forever. It was mom's wish to face her illness with great privacy and she did so courageously until her passing. We would like to thank all the health care professionals who helped mom during her illness, specifically Richard, Gisele, Tiffany, and Doctors MacIntosh and Wong, as well as N2W and N3W staff at Concordia Hospital. As per mom's wishes a private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. • Dear Alan...I'm so sorry for your loss. Having lost a parent myself this year I completely sympathize with you and offer you my sincere condolences. • Maxine and Bill were the 2 people to first welcome us to the neighborhood when we moved into the house next door to theirs over a decade ago. We will be forever grateful to them for their kindness and hospitality and neighborly thoughtfulness. Maxine was a wonderful lady who exchanged the "fruits" of their gardening - tomatoes, flowers and all! Upon hearing of her illness and then her passing, our hearts were broken for your family as well as ours. We will miss seeing her enjoying her gardening at the front of their house, the friendly chats and even the smallest gesture of Maxine's wave as we pull in and out of our driveway, and especially her smile and uplifting spirit. Blessed are you who have had the privilege to call her wife, mother, grandma, aunt, sister, cousin and friend. We hope and pray that you all find comfort in the love of your family and friends and in the memories of the life you all shared with her. Most of all, may the love she had for you grow brighter as time goes by, offering you light as you journey through the times ahead without her. God bless you all! - Posted by: Leandro and Fely Cometa and kids (Johanna, Dustin and Royce) (Neighbors) on: Dec 02, 2013

May your hearts be warmed by the wonderful memories she has given you. And I personally found it a pleasure and honor to have known her. - Posted by: Carol & Glenn Chudley (friend) on: Nov 23, 2013

  • With our deepest sympathy to Bill, Alan, Liana, Russ, Derek and families. How fortunate we were to have shared happy times with Maxine - so graciously received into her home; a perfect hostess. Her sense of humour stirred infectious giggles that rendered some of us weak and helpless. We are saddened by her passing but enriched with the joyful memories of her fun self. VICHNAYA PAMYAT FOREVER IN OUR MEMORIES - Posted by: David Romaniuk and Delores Puchailo (brother -in - law) on: Nov 22, 2013
