MARGARET ELIZABETH VERNON (nee HURST) Our much loved Aunt Margaret died on Friday, November 15, 2013 at the age of 94 years. She is survived by her brother David Hurst; sister-in-law Pat Hurst; sister-in-law Doreen Hurst; nieces and nephews from the Hurst and Vernon families - Shirley Render, Susan Makridis, Brian Hurst, Lorne Hurst, Sherry Hurst-Cadman, Michael Hurst, Nancy Hurst, Stuart Vernon and William Vernon. Margaret was predeceased by her parents Dr. Reuben Hurst (1937) and Alta Hurst (1992); husband Theodore Vernon (2001); her brother James Hurst (2009); her sister-in-law Mary Hurst (2009), and her eldest brother Dr. Harold Hurst (2013). Margaret was born on October 24, 1919 in Winnipeg, MB. She attended school at Alexandra, Mulvey, Gordon Bell and the University of Manitoba. During her working life she held secretarial positions in Washington, DC, New York City, Montreal, and in Winnipeg with the provincial government, The T. Eaton Co. legal department and with Great West Life in the investments branch. She married Theodore (Ted) Vernon in 1954. As a couple, they loved to travel, listen to classical music, dance, and spend time with family and friends. Margaret was a devoted daughter and wife and cared for her mother and her husband Ted when their health declined. She still found time to look after herself and enjoyed regular shopping trips to Eaton's, The Bay, Birks and other downtown stores. She loved to collect and had beautiful pieces of jewelry, clothing and household items. Until this year she was able to live an independent and active life. Due to health issues, Margaret recently moved from her home on Crane Avenue to Sterling House. Unfortunately, she was only able to enjoy the month of September and a few weeks of October at Sterling House before she was hospitalized. The family would like to thank Margaret's neighbours - the Harwood and Hashimoto families - for their kindness to Margaret and for visiting her in the hospital. A memorial service will be held at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Donald Street at Graham Avenue, on Tuesday, November 26 at 2:00 p.m. Margaret's ashes will be interned at Elmwood Cemetery alongside her husband, mother and father at a later date.
