KRISTJAN ALLEN BACKMAN With broken hearts and sorrow, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved husband, Dad, Afi and Lang Afi Kristjan Allen Backman on November 22, 2013 in his 89th year, surrounded by his loving family. Allen was born in the Otto District in his grandparent's home on July 12, 1924, the first of three children born to Baldwin and Freda Backman who started the family farm. Allen grew up on the farm, attended school in Oak Point and worked on the farm alongside his Dad. Years later Allen and his Dad became partners in dairy farming, first in cream and later in fluid milk. The dairy farm operated until 1993 when the Holstein herd was sold. In 1994 a beef herd was started with Larry, Laurie and Garnet. Allen married Ivy Sigurdson on February 9, 1950 in Winnipeg and were married for 63 years. Mom was the love of his life. He had a great love for his family, the farm and his John Deere tractors and was meticulous with everything. He always wanted a houseful of kids and his face would light up when his grandchildren and great-grandchildren came to visit. He would always say "come again". Dad had a very strong work ethic from the time he was a boy and carried that throughout his life. His hard work did not go unnoticed by those who knew him and, in 1973, he was awarded the "Best Dairy Farm in Manitoba". Allen is survived by his loving wife Ivy, children Verna (Gary), Kathy (Alan), Ken (Lynn), Sharon, Larry (Julie-Ann), Laurie and Garnet; grandchildren Garth, Lisa (Darren), Kristina (Mark), Angela (Wade), Ryan (Jen), Stacey (Steve), Krystal (Cyril), Reid (Tori), and James (Katelynn), along with 11 great-grandchildren, one sister Helga Bartholomew; brothers-in-law Eddie (Louise) Sigurdson, Franklin (Ella) Sigurdson and Fred (Betty) Burdett, along many nieces and nephews and very dear friends Les (Eileen) Johnson and Alan Arnason. Allen is predeceased by his parents, an infant son, sister Lillian Harris, brothers-in-law Will Harris and Ron Bartholomew, father and mother-in-law Joe and Katie Sigurdson, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Lyn and Josie Harris; sister-in-law Audrey Burdett, and son-in-law Elwood Goodman. A Family Funeral Service will be held on November 28, 2013 at the Lundar Lutheran Church in Lundar, MB with Pastor Erwin Tippel officiating. Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Lundar Lutheran Cemetery. Our family would like to thank the EMS, the staff of the Eriksdale Personal Care Home and the nurses and staff of the E. M. Crowe Memorial Hospital in Eriksdale. Special thanks to Dr. Burnet for all his years of care of our Dad and also to Dr. Arara.
