RAYMOND HAMILTON LAVERY March 26, 1939 - December 11, 2013 It is with deep sadness the family announces the peaceful passing of Raymond Hamilton Lavery on December 11, 2013, after a brief, however, a truly brave fight with Myeloma cancer. Raymond was predeceased by his parents Victor (1967) and Opal (2011). He leaves to mourn his partner Brian, of 24 years, sister Diane (Bill), nieces Sheena (Paul), Shauna (Jason), Shasta (Mike), aunts, cousins and many friends. Raymond attended Daniel Mac High School where he made life long friends, lasting over 50 years. After high school Raymond went on to earn a BA, BED degree at the University of Manitoba, a Master degree in Education and a Doctorate in Education at the University of Toronto. Raymond was an educator who dedicated over 45 years to Literacy in Manitoba. He was a former English teacher and Department Chair, University Instructor and curriculum writer, as well as an education consultant for the Province of Manitoba. He mentored classroom teachers, graduate students and shared his expertise at conferences and workshops. Raymond was awarded the Lieutenant Governor's Award medal for Literacy in 2007. Raymond had many passions, however, one that stands out more profoundly than any other was the caring for other people. Raymond was a loving and generous man who placed the needs of everyone else before his own. We feel ever so lucky to have known him and have him as part of our lives. We would like to thank all of the doctors and nurses at Victoria General Hospital for all of their care and compassion for Raymond. You all were truly amazing. To our beloved Raymond, we will miss you and you will always be in our HEARTS. In tears we saw you sinking, We watched you fade away, You suffered much in silence, You fought so hard to stay. You faced your task with courage, Your spirit did not bend, But still you kept on fighting, Until the very end. God saw you getting tired, When a cure was not to be, So He put His arms around you, And whispered, "Come to Me". So when we saw you sleeping, So peaceful and free from pain, We could not wish you back, To suffer that again. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 11, 2014, at 1:00 p.m., at St. Luke's Anglican Church, 130 Nassau St. N., Winnipeg. Please no cards or flowers, however, in lieu of, donations may be made in Raymond's memory to Myeloma Canada; CancerCare Manitoba or to another charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (33 entries)

  • Mr. Lavery was the best teacher I ever had! I was lucky enough to have him for two years in high school. Due to his influence and excellent inspirational teaching, I entered the field of linguistics and literacy. I just helped my daughter interpret Hamlet the other day as I recalled it vividly from Mr. Lavery's teaching. He was a very supportive teacher and even came to watch a dance performnce and track & field competition in which I was a participant. How lucky I was to have had him for an educator and mentor. He will be missed. - Posted by: Jacqueline Glance (Former Student GCCI) on: May 13, 2014

  • Brian, our thoughts are with you at this sad time. Nessa Herman, an admirer and former neighbour, and Albert Anderson, keeper of the toaster. - Posted by: Nessa Herman () on: Jan 14, 2014

  • I have so many engaging remembrances of Raymond from our years together at Manitoba Education. We worked right next to one another - I the scientific "rationalist" and he as the oracle of the "literati" who loved to torment the pretenses of the sciences as masquerading as the light in the darkness. I don't think Ray ever knew that my first loves are classical music and literature...and keeping these as hidden treasures allowed me to laugh with him when he would go on with a soliloquy that might begin like this: "Now, about science....my indifference to its importance is exceeded only by its irrelevance to the society..." "Everybody loved Raymond".....he will be fondly remembered - especially his broad smile and even broader appeal! Walk those mystical beaches now..... - Posted by: John Murray (Friend and Former Colleague at Manitoba Education) on: Jan 10, 2014

  • When I think of Ray, the first thought is of that wonderfully warm smile, and then that great spirit of acceptance and love for all. Ray, your phenomenal mind and your big heart offered so much to so many. I miss you a great deal! Brian, please know I am thinking of you at this time of such an immense loss. You two had such a wonderful life together and I hope somehow your many memories will carry you over the tough days. Love you too, Darlene - Posted by: Darlene Lindsay (Friend) on: Jan 10, 2014

  • Most knew of Uncle Ray as a mentor, educator, friend....I knew him as an inspiration, but also a funny and "clumsy at times" uncle who relied on Brian to keep him in order (ha ha). My heart goes out to my mom, Brian, and Marita. I am glad I got to say goodbye and let him know how he impacted my life. - Posted by: Sheena (Niece) on: Jan 08, 2014

  • Dear Brian, The world has lost a wonderful soul who will be sadly missed by so many people, but none more than you. My thoughts are with you and family and friends as we all reflect on Ray's wonderful and accomplished life. • Ray Lavery was one of the best teachers I had in high school at Stonewall Collegiate. He was an inspiration to many, smart and funny, and he had to endure too many who were not interested in learning. But he did it with grace, and some he got through to, and it is why we enjoy literature to this day. - Posted by: Robert Hawkins (Student) on: Jan 06, 2014

  • Brian, it is with much sadness that I will not be with you, your family, and Ray's friends and colleagues to celebrate a life lived to the fullest. His passion for literacy, learning, and teaching has had a profound impact on our classrooms, and I reflect upon this often. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this very difficult time. - Posted by: Joan Bartley (Friend and colleague at Manitoba Education) on: Jan 02, 2014

  • Brian, you know how much we loved Raymond. We will always treasure our times together. Ray was a friend first but also a great mentor to Gail as she worked on her Reading Assessment project. The project was completed Dec. 11th. A few hours later your email arrived. We were greatly saddened but how appropriate... that Raymond passed with an unknown legacy completed. Thanks Ray for your endless guidance. Brian, stay strong. Raymond was blessed to have you in his life. Love to you dear friend. • I was fortunate enough to have had Mr. Lavery as my high school English teacher. He allowed my creative writing juices to flow and was very accepting of potentially controversial pieces myself and others chose to write about. I recall a piece I wrote on Satan (I actually still have the essay) as well as a group project that involved Winnipeg's homeless community. I learned a lot in his class. He will never be forgotten. Rest in peace Mr. Lavery. - Posted by: Aimee Horbul (Former Student (grad 1989)) on: Dec 21, 2013
