MELVILLE (MEL) WALTON DAVEY July 16, 1924 - December 19, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden but peaceful passing of Mel Davey at the age of 89. Mel will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Anne (Semeniuk), daughter Janice (Gary) Oruck, son Gary, son Gregg (Bunny) and his grandchildren Paul, Kira, Garrett, Keith, Ashley, Jalin, and sister in-law Elsie, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Harry Walton Davey and Margaret Ross Davey along with two brothers in infancy. Mel grew up in St. James and went on to serve in the Second World War with the Canadian Grenadier Guards, 4th Armoured Division. After returning home from the war he met and married Anne and soon started a family. He was Branch Manager for the Cooperative Hail Insurance Company where he worked for 39 years until his retirement in 1991. Mel was an avid athlete and fitness buff who loved tennis and running but most of all loved volleyball, which he played well into his seventies. He was inducted into the Manitoba Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2002. Mel's greatest passion was the family cottage at Big Whiteshell Lake that he started building in 1959 and continued to build on to it every summer after that. Some of Mel's fondest memories were of the lasting friendships that he made during his return to Holland in 1995 to take part in the 50th Anniversary of the Allied Liberation of the Netherlands. He was deeply humbled to be warmly welcomed by young and old alike and this stayed in his heart until the end. A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 27 at 11:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. A private interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to make donations in Mel's memory to the charity of their choice. Cropo Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements; 204-586- 8044.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I am from Jamaica, W.I. As a little girl going to Mannings High School, l had a sponsor from Canada named Davey Melville. This person assisted me financially as my parents were very poor. I was very grateful for the assistance. I had a flashback this morning and decided to do a search. If this is the person, l am pretty sure a special place in heaven was prepared for him. May his soul rest in peace.w - Posted by: Sonia Foote (Friend) on: Mar 12, 2022
