MARGARET GOTTFRIED 1917 ! 2013 After a long and full life, Margaret Gottfried died peacefully on December 24, 2013 at her home, Fred Douglas Lodge. Born in Berlo, Manitoba on September 26, 1917, Margaret was the tenth child in a family of fourteen. Her parents, Michael and Rosalia Gottfried were one of the pioneer families of Berlo and Margaret was fiercely proud of her family heritage in the Berlo, Meleb and Camp Morton area. Besides her parents, Margaret was predeceased by her siblings Elizabeth (Schreyer), Mary (Pfeifer), Veronica (Sales) John Gottfried, Katherine (Marks), Anne (Franz), Eva (Marks), Louise (Schnerch) and Michael Gottfried. Left to mourn her passing are her sisters Rose (Rostek) and Lena (Kunz), brothers Adam Gottfried, Joseph Gottfried and sister-in-law Rene. Also left to mourn her passing and cherish her memory are many, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews as well as her dear friend Sandra. Margaret did not have children but made all the children of her brothers and sisters her own, taking great pride in all of their accomplishments. She generously shared her time, interests and resources with all of them, teaching them to fish, play cards, and generally enjoy life. She was always welcomed into their homes to share a meal, have a hand of crib and get to know the next generation of little ones. Margaret kept a notebook of all the names of her parents descendants and proudly entered each new birth. An avid sports fan, Margaret faithfully supported the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and won many curling and bowling trophies which she proudly displayed. Margaret's work life centered around service to others and reached as far as Toronto and Red Lake Ontario, New York, Seattle and Florida. She retired as a family care provider in Winnipeg in the summer of 1982. On that special occasion her nephews and nieces hosted a celebration and declared July 17, 1982 "Auntie Margaret Day". Margaret happily spent the last two and a half years of her life at Fred Douglas Lodge and her family is very grateful to the staff for their care and many kindnesses to Margaret. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Alphonsus Church, corner of Munroe and Brazier at 11:00 am on Monday, December 30, 2013. Viewing will commence at 10:30 am. Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • I am one of those lucky children and adults who was made to feel important by Margaret's conversations with each of us. - Posted by: Norma Cone [Arnes MB] (niece of Mike & Florence Gottfried) on: Feb 13, 2014

  • My family and I had the great pleasure to meet and know Margaret in her twilight years, before she moved over to Fred Douglas Lodge. Margaret was a very caring and compassionate lady, always willing to spend time with my children Nicole, Matthew and Melissa - make a smile and share a story. Being a Bomber fan and knowing we had been long-time season ticket holders, we spent much time talking about the team, the last game and what they needed to do to turn it around. Margaret was such a lovely lady and will be sorely missed. It was our pleasure to have had her next door to mom and share some of our time with her. Our condolences and love to the family. - Posted by: Todd and Darcy Shewchuk (Friend & Neighbor of my mother at Kildonan Horizons) on: Dec 30, 2013

  • I have many special memories of aunt Margaret. She loved her nieces & nephews very much and we all loved her. Margaret would come to Toronto during the Exibition and we would play BINGO. We also went to football games in Toronto & Hamilton. She loved football, especially the Blue Bombers. I'll miss her. May she rest in peace. - Posted by: Richard W. • Auntie Margaret always loved all of her large family, especially her nieces and nephews. Every one of us can recall a first time life experience with Auntie Margaret. She helped us all "grow up" in some way. She had many stories to tell of her work and travels in Europe and North America. Auntie Margaret was always there for our family. I especially remember when she stayed with my mother for many months after my father died. Thank you Auntie Margaret....Rest in Peace - Posted by: John Gottfried (Nephew) on: Dec 29, 2013

  • I have many fond memories of Aunt Margaret from the time I was a young boy growing up in Toronto until the present. In reflection, the memories almost exclusively contain laughter and fun times. I believe that the good times in heaven have just been kicked up a notch. Rest in peace Aunt Margaret, love you. Nephew Carmen - Posted by: Carmen Gottfried (Nephew) on: Dec 29, 2013
