Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHELEN NICKEL (FRIESEN) September 19, 1914 - December 18, 2013 After suffering a stroke, our dear Mother, Granny and Great-Granny, passed away on December 18, 2013 at Eastview Place in Altona, Manitoba at the age of 99. Helen was born to Jacob and Katherine Friesen, in Carman, Manitoba on September 19, 1914, where her Dad had a Flourmill until 1916. From there the family moved to New Hope where her Dad worked at the McCabe Elevator until 1923. Then, they moved to a farm in Silberfeld, near Altona, Manitoba. This is where she and her five siblings grew up. On October 24, 1937, Helen married John J. Nickel from the Weidenfeld S.D. They farmed in the Rosenheim S.D. for six years and then, moved to the Weidenfeld S.D. where they farmed and raised four children. In 1993 it was time to retire and this was a very difficult decision for our Mother! On August 10, of that year they bought the house at 214 Poplar Drive, in Altona. Mother grew to love that home! Mother loved to sew, knit and crotchet and lovingly tended her large vegetable garden. Nothing went to waste! Her cookie jar was always full for the grandchildren. She enjoyed knitting toques, mittens and scarves for the less fortunate in her later years. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren enjoyed the fruits of her labour too! Mother was predeceased by her husband, John J., in 1999 and her son, Mel J., in 2010 and her brothers, Dave, Eddie and Ben, sisters Trudy Eppler and Anne (Putt) Eppler. She is survived by children, Myrna (Henry) Block, Grant (Leona) daughter-in-law, Maria Nickel, Ronda (Lawrence) Homenko and former daughter-in-law Janis Nickel, nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. After losing our Dad, Mother remained in her home until the age of 97. She could no longer cope on her own, so, she moved into Eastview Place, where she received excellent care. The family wishes to thank all of Mother's ex-neighbours, friends and the wonderful staff at Eastview. Funeral service will be held at the Altona United Church on Friday, January 3, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Wiebe Funeral Home Altona in charge of arrangements. Phone: 204-324-5404

Our sincere condolences to Aunt Helen's family on her passing. In her youth, family knew her as vibrant, as vibrant as any today. As an adult she was steady with a ready laugh, strong and responsible, and as she aged she carried a wealth of experience that she could convey, easily, with a look and a smile. Ninety-nine years of experience; a large book of knowledge that she passed on to those who listened. And now she rests. Dear Family of Helen, Please accept my deepest condolences on the death of your mother. I have wonderful memories ranging from childhood to adulthood. Time spent with your family in early years and later in life when I would take Abe & Justine to visit with your parents. Helen always had a lovely lunch of borscht and homemade pickles and such. It was always such a good visit. It is the end of an era. My parents are now both gone, Dad in 2011 and Mom in Dec of 2012. Your mother was a remarkable woman and I always had a great admiration for her. I will think of you all on Friday. Embrace your memories---you were so blessed to have her in your lives.
