JOHN DONAT PELLETIER John Donat Pelletier passed away suddenly on December 27, 2013 at Tuxedo Villa Care Home. He will be sadly missed by his wife Irene (nee Poitras); his children Guy (Diadema), Paul (Ivannia), Rene (Linda), Gisele (Marcel Blair), John (Jowana) and Jackie (Rod Feledechuk); sister-in-law Sylvia; grandchildren Logan, Genevieve (Craig Kennedy), John, Noahmay, Lauricia (Andrew Neale), Monique (Derek Dowsett), Desiree, Corinne, Andrea (Don Ritson), Joey (Teresa), TJ, Rosie (Martin Beauvais), Angelina, Kelera (Danny Williams), Kristen (Phillipe Lamontagne), Garrett (Keri Johanson), and great-grandchildren James, Cody, Victoria, Ewan, Jack Paul, Zach, Sarah, Vaughan, Deja, Ruby, Bert, Teagan, Lily, Tayshaun, Avah, Anaia, Daniel, and Sophia. John was born June 19, 1919 in St. Boniface and attended St. Boniface College. He married the love of his life Irene on April 11, 1944. He enlisted in the R.C.A.F. in 1941 until 1946. He re-enlisted in the R.C.A.F. in 1951 working as a medic/X-ray technician. We traveled as a family to many parts of Eastern Canada, finally ending up in Winnipeg. On retirement from the Forces, he took a sales job with Sears. This enabled his transfer to the Sears store in Victoria. Lawn bowling became a new activity while in Victoria. Both Dad and Mom were very involved in the lawn bowling club there. Dad and Mom spent 20 years in Victoria before returning to Winnipeg to be near family. They remained independent until just this year when they became residents of Tuxedo Villa where Mom remains. Dad was a very special man. He always had time for his six children. We have many memories of those special times spent with Dad. We spent many summer weeks camping in our big, white army surplus tent wherever we were stationed. When the grandchildren arrived, he could not get enough of them...going to the zoo, playing mini golf, playing catch, or trying to organize extra dessert for the kids and himself. When the great-grandchildren started to come, it was the same thing...you could see his smile from across the room. Sitting on Grand Pere's lap listening to a story was the best. He always had his camera ready to take the perfect picture! Sports were a big part of Dads lifehockey, curling, football...all of it! As a young man in the Forces he would be flown to the hockey games to ensure a win! Curling bonspiels were a regular winter activity and he had many trophies to prove it. Dad could be seen flipping from one channel to the next if there was more than one game on TV. This last year was a tough one for Dad but no matter his physical or mental impairment he remained the gracious, caring man we knew and he never lost his sense of humour. Our family would like to thank the staff at Tuxedo Villa for the care and compassion they showed in their care of our father while he was a resident there. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the MS Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. In keeping with John's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel with Fr. Mark Tarrant officiating. Dad, you will be missed and you will be in our hearts forever... Rest in Peace. The Coutu family in care of arrangements: E.J. COUTU CO. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Thanks Uncle Johnny, for your genuine & caring disposition. Your cheerful laugh was always there. What a beautiful difference one single life can make to others. And besides all that, you sold me a great sewing machine from Sears! Your earthly work is done, rest now. Love, Georgie xxx - Posted by: Georgette Poitras (Niece) on: Jan 10, 2014

  • To Irene and all of John's Family: My late husband, Bev Jones, worked with John at Sears, Polo Park, for several years. I met him from time to time in the store, but my favourite memory is when he came to watch our son playing hockey in Charleswood in a championship game. It was crowded, so I was sitting, with my husband and John standing behind me. When my son scored, John was so excited he had his hands on my shoulders, jumping up and down - forgetting that I was holding a cup of coffee - which, of course, splashed into my face and down my parka. We could only laugh at John's enthusiasm! He must have a been a great Dad/Pere and Grandfather/Grandpere for you all. Sincerely, Jan Jones - Posted by: Jan Jones (Aquaintance) on: Dec 31, 2013

  • Dear Dad, aka GrandPere, many things comes to mind when we think of you. Your gentle smiles, caring ways, always asking how we were doing in any given time we met up. We were so blessed by your generous spirit, your giving, and never counting the cost of what you can do for your children and grandchildren and loved ones. I count myself lucky to be part of your family. Having come from a different country, culture, way of life, you made sure that John my husband got your advice or message how to be good and accommodating to my needs and to be patient in learning about the Canadian way of life. I still remember the first year I came here, you were taking cooking classes in Victoria to help mom out in your retirement years. And the Cooking Instructor had put together a cookbook with all the Metric system measurements and the Imperial British equivalents. Dad, you bought and sent me one of the cookbooks, and inside you wrote a message and signed; Affectionately yours, dad. I was touched by your thoughtfulness and kindness. You may have left us now, but our love for you will never leave you. Sincerely and affectionately yours, Jowana. - Posted by: Jowana Pelletier (Daughter-in- law) on: Dec 31, 2013
