NICK MALEGUS December 1, 1918 - December 30, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our father, gege and old (great) gege on Monday, December 30, 2013 at 7:20 p.m. surrounded by his family. Dad was predeceased by his beloved wife Sophie on October 5, 1997; parents Nikita (1974), Mary (1940); brothers John (1998) (Lena), Peter (2007), Mike (2002) (Eleanore) and his eldest sister Josie Stanko (2010) (Bill); his brother-in-law John Brunet; his in-laws Wasyl and Maria Citulski and by his sisters-in-law Anne, Pearl, Tillie, Rose, Mary and Olga. He leaves surviving three children, daughter Linda (Bill) Skromeda; sons Steven (Lesli) and Richard (Penny); grandchildren David (Candace) Skromeda, Randy (Julie) Skromeda, Debra Hanson, Courtney (Jeremy) Zdrill, Kjirsten Malegus (Brohdi), Adam (Sheryl) Wedensky and Emerald (Kory) Savary; great-grandchildren Kristian, Benjamin and Ava Skromeda, Nicholas and Lukas Skromeda, Kaitlyn Hanson and Ella Wedensky. Dad loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren so much and often commented how blessed he was to have been able to see them born and watch them grow. Dad is also survived by his brother Sam (Moira) Malegus; sister Olga (Stan) Chura, youngest sister Kay Brunet; sister-in-law Louise Malegus, and his nieces, nephews and godchildren. Dad was born and raised in Melrose, MB and as a young boy worked hard on the farm. Dad and Uncle Mike left the farm at an early age to seek work. They rode the rails across Canada, harvested crops, cut trees, anything to make money and survive the hard times. After dad's mom died, he came home to stay. On one of his outings, dad met mom at a dance at Half Moon. In 1944, three months after they met, they married and resided in Rossdale for most of their lives. Dad had a variety of jobs throughout his life ending with a job with the Lord Selkirk School Division driving school bus. He drove bus for 16 years and retired in 1984. He then devoted his time to market gardening, specializing in garlic and became known as the "Garlic King of Rossdale." Dad was very active and at the age of 88 he still walked approximately five km. every day. People still remember seeing him on his daily exercise route. At age 90 he walked the treadmill at home. Ukrainian Christmas on the Old Calendar was very important to dad and he looked forward to having the family over to celebrate these Feast days. Dad was a devout member of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Rossdale. He attended Liturgy every Sunday until failing health made it too difficult. He loved socializing and helping the parish and pinching perogies. He said he would come every day to pinch if he could! Dad liked to keep himself busy but unfortunately as the years went by his health deteriorated. His mind was willing but his body wasn't. We would like to thank the staff at Red River Place where he resided for the past 14 months. Thank you to the staff at the Selkirk General Hospital for the care provided during the last two weeks, to Father Yaroslov for his spiritual guidance to Dad at the hospital and to Wes Gilbart and staff at Gilbart Funeral Home. A special thank you to Dr. Richard Lindenschmidt for his care and compassion at both the hospital and personal care home. Parastas (Prayers) will be sung on Friday, January 3, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, 530 Donald Rd., Rossdale, MB. Funeral Divine Liturgy will be sung on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. also in the church with Father Yaroslav Buduykevych officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, 530 Donald Rd., Lockport, MB R1A 3K4; Selkirk Palliative Care, PO Box 5000, Selkirk, MB R1A 2M2, or the Canadian Diabetes Foundation, Box 12013 STN. BRM B, Toronto, ON M7Y 2L3. We love you and will miss you Dad, but we know you're free from pain and with your Heavenly Father and the Blessed Mother. May he rest in peace. I met and knew him through my (then) in-laws, Bill and Helen Borsh. I was married to their daughter Patricia. I like the way you wrote his obituary and showing both his younger and older photographs. The obituary was down right plain and simple, not glossy and exaggerated. I am so sorry to hear the news today. We grew up right next door to Mr and Mrs Malegus. To say he was the best bus driver ever would be an understatement. I share with my kids how I would walk over to his house in the morning and hop on the bus, the very first pick up on his route. There was something so comfortable and kind about him that when it came time to move to another bus driver, well it just wasn't the same. Thinking of you all. - Posted by: Nancy Dunsmore (Shymkiw) (Neighbour) on: Jan 03, 2014

Our hearts and thoughts are with Uncle Nick’s family. His passing represents the end of an era for one generation of the Citulski family. He was a unique individual, difficult to describe effectively but so easy to love. We will miss this special man. Heather and Harry. - Posted by: Harry & Heather Panaschuk (Family) on: Jan 03, 2014

We're all so sorry to hear about Uncle Nick's passing. We loved to get "one ring" phone calls from him because he would always say we were "looking good"! He was always so much fun to be around and reminded us so much of our Dad because they looked so alike. We're glad the family got the chance to spend his most recent birthday and Christmas with him one last time. Our hearts go out to the whole family. Hugs from us (the city Malegus kids) to the out of town (Malagus) family. - Posted by: Michael Malegus, Mandy Smaczylo , Jackie Malegus and Audrey Malchuk (Nephew and nieces ) on: Jan 02, 2014
