RONALD KENNETH PATTERSON
Date of Passing: Dec 30, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRONALD KENNETH PATTERSON On December 30, 2013, Ronald Kenneth Patterson, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away peacefully. He leaves behind to mourn his wife of 50 years Judy, sons Ronald (Janet), James (Kathy), Russell (Linda) and Robert (Heather). Also left behind to cherish his memory are eight grandchildren: Leia, Jessica, Gabriel, Alexandra, Sage, Caroline, Reed and Matthew. An important part of Ron's early life was Knox United Church and the Knox Knights. Ron's basketball skills were honed early in his life, as part of the Knox youth league. He was also involved in the church as a leader at Camp Wasaga, a youth church camp. These years at Knox United Church allowed Ron to explore his passion for caring and guiding Winnipeg youth. Professionally, Ron began his career as an estimator for a local construction company in the early 1950s. In the mid1960s he co-founded and operated a mid-sized general contracting company in Winnipeg, building several offices and schools throughout the city. Ron spent the last 20 years of his career as a distributor of gift products throughout Western Canada. He was the inaugural and current executive director of the Western Wood Truss Association. This was a position he held from 1989 until present, substantially increasing its membership. Another important part of Ron's life was the YMCA, both early and later on in his life. In fact, he met his wife, Judy, at a Saturday evening dance at the Y. In later years, the Y became a place to take his family on weekends, to play basketball, swim and have a steam, and to make business contacts at the Men's club. Ron married Judy in August 1963, and they recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. They had four boys and he was involved in many facets in each of their lives, including coaching sports, fishing, cross country skiing, sailing, and summers at Falcon Lake. Ron knew all his boys' friends and their families, and all the boys knew their friends were always welcome at their house on Cordova St. During the 70s and 80s, you were almost sure to find a sports game of some sort going on at Cordova Park, and almost all the kids and adults in the neighbourhood would be playing. As a grandparent Ron became involved in his grandchildren's lives as well, including babysitting, having them at his home for sleepovers, attending school activities and concerts, and sporting events. He spent the last five years caring for his beloved wife Judy, who has been suffering from ALS. A committed member of the congregation of Immanuel Pentecostal Church, Ron was a dedicated member of his bible and life study group which he hosted every Wednesday at his home. He especially enjoyed Pastor Scott's insights and teachings about Scripture. Ron will be dearly missed by family and friends. In lieu of flowers donations to the ALS Society of Manitoba would be graciously appreciated. Ron was a gentle and very sweet man. In the 1970s, I invited Ron to come to a seminar at Red River College, to talk about the ups and downs of being a contractor in Winnipeg. It was supposed to be a small group, but about 80 people showed up! Ron was engaging, warm, and clear with everyone there. He was much appreciated...by all who knew him. - Posted by: john pickering (ex brother-in-law, photographer at his wedding to Judy, in 1963.) on: Jan 04, 2014
