GERTRUD (MARIA) LINNEMANN (nee WULFF) Peacefully, after a short illness, Gertrud passed away at the Victoria Hospital, January 4, 2014. She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her family: Joe, Vera (Gord Willson and Madeleine, Matthew, Kathleen), Bernie (Patty and Emily, Natalie), Michael (Marion and Cathy, Jenny). She was predeceased by husband Harald in 1980. Mom was born May 17, 1925 in Hamburg, Germany where she spent her youth and met and married Harald Linnemann in 1948. They immigrated to England to work on a country estate and then moved to Canada in 1953, seeking and finding new opportunities. In the 1960s Mom began her career with the University of Manitoba, where she managed the Information Desk, later renamed "Mrs. L's Emporium" in her honour by the Student's Union. Her ability to relate to students and staff earned her much respect and many lifelong relationships. After retirement, volunteering, storytelling, courses in painting and travel with her art group kept Mom very active and involved and she became a gifted painter. Our mother had an adventurous spirit and a great faith that allowed her to meet many challenges with acceptance and a positive attitude, along with humour, perseverance and a talent for finding creative solutions. Her belief in Anthroposophy shaped her vision and how she lived her life. Mom's love of family was foremost in her life and being young at heart, she always had a special bond with her grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at Thomson "In the Park", 1291 McGillivray Blvd. on Friday, January 10 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of your choice. Maria was the sweetest and helpful neighbour (and colleage at the UofM) one could have wished for. With her (all to early departed husband) she "ran" a fine family. Their children were and remain great - even though they have now all moved out of the parental home. Our close-knit neighbourhood is a lot poorer and, thus, much sadder. - Posted by: Jesse Vorst (long-time neighbour) on: Jan 17, 2015

Mrs. L. was an inspiration to me from the moment I met her at the info Desk in the 1970s. My friends and I became like members of her family, spending many unforgettable days and evenings with the family, cutting Christmas trees, eating Mr. L's chicken soup and marzipan pastry, listening to stories from the war. We shared a lot of laughter. She was an extraordinary woman and I will miss her greatly, as I miss Mr. L. My deepest sympathies to the Linnemann family. - Posted by: Shirley Geller (Friend) on: Jan 10, 2014

I have had the pleasure of spending many wonderful Christams Eves with all the Linnemann family. On those occasions, I witnessed such true love between Gertrud and her children and grandchildren. She was so adored by all and it was easy to see why. She led the evening with great food, readings and gifts from her heart and made every person feel very special. She was gentle, spiritual, artisitic, bright and young at heart - a lovely woman who will be so missed. Our thoughts are with you all.
