SHIRLEY (LEE) ANNE SHUM, BSW, RPN (nee WIELER) March 1, 1944 - January 5, 2014 It is with immense sadness and grief to announce the unexpected passing of Shirley Anne Shum on January 5, 2014 at Concordia Hospital with her family by her side. Shirley was born in Winnipeg on March 1, 1944 to Anna and John Wieler. Although she left this world far too soon she spent her time living life to the fullest. Shirley was a beautiful, vibrant and outgoing woman who lived a varied and full life. She may have been tiny but she was fierce and was a confident, caring and strong person. It is some of these traits that made her so successful in her career as a Social Worker, in Oncology at Seven Oaks Hospital and Registered Psychiatric Nurse in the Emergency department at Concordia Hospital. During her years of dedicated service in these complex positions she touched the lives of hundreds of patients, lifting and mending their spirits. However, it was her unwavering love and constant support towards her family and friends that will never be forgotten and forever be missed. Shirley is survived by her loving husband Les, children Holly, Ryan and Michelle (Brodie), grandchildren Bret and Elise and brother Raymond (Loraine). In addition to her family and friends she will be missed by her beloved cats Zoey and Buddy. Shirley had an innate way at developing special bonds not only with humans but animals as well. It is because of this that the family request that in lieu of flowers, donations to the Winnipeg Humane Society be made in her honour. The family would like to thank all the hospital staff at Concordia for their care, compassion and efforts during the last few days of her life. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2014 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. Shirley loved to travel and see the world, her favourite destination being Hawaii. As she wished, her ashes will be taken there to be cast into the warm, turquoise waters by her family. Makuahine, aloha mau wau ia' oe (Mom, we will love you always). Cropo Funeral Chapel, 204-586-8044

Condolences & Memories (12 entries)

  • I am horribly sad I just learned of Shirley's passing. I met Les and Shirley in 2010 when my friend Francine and I travelled to Honolulu and we became "Hawaii buddies"…having cocktails together, cruising the island in the Shum's convertible, island cruises, power hang-gliding, and celebrating Shirley's birthday on March 1st two years in a row. I can still hear Shirley's voice and her laugh. While I didn't get to see the Shums often, we picked up where we left off…especially when we met at Duke's for happy hour. I often think of the fun times we had…. I will miss her. Les and family - I am so sorry for your loss...and I am so sorry I am so late in sharing this little story. - Posted by: Dale Oughton (Friend) on: Jul 09, 2014

  • I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Shirley's passing. I called her Lee and we were students together at U of Manitoba Faculty of Social Work. We studied together and became good friends. We shared some good times and lots of laughs during our "study times" at her home. Unfortunately our lives went separate ways and we lost touch. I will always remember her fondly and regret that we didn't get together more often. Good Bless you Lee and rest in peace. My condolences go out to her husband Les, children and family. • Uncle Les, Michelle, Ryan and Holly - I was shocked and deeply saddened when I heard of Auntie Shirley's passing. I always looked forward to spending a few weeks every second summer in Winnipeg to visit with everyone, and will always remember Auntie Shirley's infectiously warm personality and adoration of her family. It's funny the small things that sometimes stick in your mind, but I vividly remember the expression on her face as she described Michelle's graduation (from high school) and how happy, incredibly proud she was, not just that Michelle graduated but of the wonderful person she had grown up to be. Even though we lived so far apart and didn't have the opportunity to see each other very often, I could always feel Auntie Shirley's love and support. I don't think any words could do justice to describe what a warm and loving person Auntie Shirley was and I will miss her a lot. - Posted by: Kerri Wazny (Niece) on: Feb 04, 2014

  • To my family: the world was and is a better place for having her. I'm struggling to find all the right words to say how much she meant to me. Having been friends with Michelle for so long and basically growing up in your home, I feel like she was a mother to me, and as we grew older, also a great friend. We could talk for hours, and we did. I'm glad we got to have one last glass of wine together in early December, I'll treasure that. She was smart, spunky, honest and fiercely protective of the people, animals and things she loved. She was a genuine and big-hearted person that everyone is lucky to know. I'm going to miss her so much. Love you guys, xoxoxoxo. - Posted by: Adriane (Friend of family/General pain in their behinds) on: Jan 21, 2014

  • Les, Holly, Ryan, Michelle and family - so sorry to hear of Shirley's sudden passing. We were fortunate to have seen her this august while you were visiting the okanagan. Shirley was still very enthusiastic about life and was really looking forward to the birth of Michelle's baby. Fortunately, she was able to see her granddaughter, Elise Annette, while in Vancouver this november. We will remember the many good times we shared together. We'll miss you, Shirley. • My sincere condolences to Shirley's family. Having walked down the same road a few months ago myself, I understand, first hand, how difficult this is for all of you. I am very sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Darlene Mozel (Family Friend) on: Jan 13, 2014

  • I was a few years older then Shirley but because our parents always got together we became friends as well and I remember her wonderful laugh. The last time I saw her was at Raymond's wedding and that is a long time ago. Was very surprised to hear she had passed away and by the sound of the other comments she was still the fun loving girl and it makes me wish I would have kept in touch. My condolences. - Posted by: Edna (Hiebert) Vogt (Our parents were good friends in new Bothwell ) on: Jan 12, 2014

  • I met Shirley 48 years ago hiding behind a dance hall having a cigarette. I quickly lit one up too and our friendship was instantly formed with my husband's cousin. She always had a story to tell in a detailed and interesting way. One time while staying overnight at our place in Calgary we couldn't find our dog Peppy anywhere. She had him in bed and Peppy was staying very quiet because he knew better. After that it became harder and harder to keep him off the beds. Finally we just gave in and he slept on the bed with one of our children. Shirley loved her dogs and cats and gave them the run of the house. We have spent many Christmases together at our house. Ryan's video is very touching and shows that Christmas is about family. This past Christmas Shirley had a sixth sense when she purchased gifts for Erika and Austyn – they were the perfect gifts. She also brought over a lemon cheesecake that was the best we ever had and said “it better be good, it took me all day to make it while Les watched”. She mentioned that turkey was her favourite supper and she sure enjoyed it. One of the discussions after dinner was that we could keep the dessert pan as it was part of her efforts in preparation of downsizing. She wondered aloud what other things she could do to get out of this downsizing process. In the last 23 years Les, Shirley, Al and I have dined out on the spur of the moment at many different restaurants. Not only was she my husband's cousin she was my friend. Shirley, we are going to miss you at Christmas, celebrating our anniversaries together, our many dinners, and just being there for the many phone calls and visits. • WE would say "Good morning" or "Hello" down Concordia ground floor hallways all the time for many years before she retired. Lee was a very strong and caring RPN. Rest in peace. My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Nida Cosino (Co-worker) on: Jan 10, 2014

  • Shirley and I met in 1982 when our daughters were born around the same time and we stayed in hospital a while longer, since Michelle was a premie and my Jennifer had serious health issues. Our two families quickly formed a bond, spending many hours at the hospital. It did not take long to realize what a special person Shirley was. She was incredibly caring, witty and a go getter. She had a beautiful soul. Our lives took us in different areas and we kept in touch at times. But I must say Shirley always had a special place in my heart. To Les, Holly, Ryan, Michelle and family; We are so sorry for your loss.Y our wife, your mother has made such a positive impact on the lives of so many people.S he will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you! - Posted by: Liliane and Marvin Ferley (Friends) on: Jan 09, 2014
