If my memory serves me correctly, Cory and I became friends in 1979 whilst attending Earl Grey School in Winnipeg. He had two younger brothers, Ian and Gregory, the latter we called Giggy. His parents Debbie and Harold were very warm, kind, welcoming and supportive parents and I recall on countless Saturdays piling into the Gartner van heading off in -25 degree weather to ice hockey tournaments in and around Winnipeg. We played hockey for several years together and one day the sad news had reached me that the Gartner's were moving. One of the last things we did together, almost as a family, was attend a Winnipeg Warrior's game at the old Winnipeg Arena. We lost contact with each other until we were about 22-23 years old. I ran into Cory, who at that time was a 'big' guy. We had some good laughs and went on our way. My sister had informed me of Cory's passing and it is with great sadness I write this story of our friendship. I now live in Amsterdam (Europe) and I have a family of my own and my son plays soccer. Every Saturday morning, I too pile the kids in the car and race off to fields around the city and beyond for soccer games - keeping the tradition I learned from the Gartner family more than 30 years ago. Cory, thanks for the friendship and the wonderful memories. Debbie and Harold, thank you for welcoming me into your home and your old big blue van. I hope that you can find comfort in my words and fond memories of you all.
