HELDER NETO It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Helder Manual Carreira Neto on Sunday, February 2, 2014, at the Riverview Health Centre, at the age of 45. Helder left this life with loved ones by his side. He will be lovingly remembered by his beautiful wife Rebecca and his wonderful children Ethan and Neve, who brought him more joy than they will ever know. Also left to mourn is Helder's father Manuel. He was predeceased by his mother Filomena in 1993. Helder also leaves behind a wide circle of family and friends throughout Canada and Portugal who will cherish his memory always. One of Helder's passions was music. He was proud of his large collection of music and was always eager to share with anyone who would listen. He worked as a dee-jay for many years at the Palomino, and supplied music at every party he attended. His final gig was his 45th birthday this past New Year's Eve. Helder's love of travel saw him experience a number of destinations. During his single life, he travelled extensively throughout Europe. In recent years, he loved to travel with his family and friends. He was most proud to share Portugal, his homeland, with Rebecca and the kids in 2011. A natural handyman, Helder's construction skills provided him the ability to completely renovate his family home. He also loved his work and friendships he made at Olympic Buildings Supply. His simple pleasures in life included fishing, a cold beer and a backyard barbeque. The family is so very grateful for the unwavering support of Helder's friends and colleagues at Olympic Building Supply, his palliative care team at Riverview and the homecare team, as well as the ALS Society of Manitoba. A celebration of Helder's life will take place on Thursday, February 6, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Thompson "In the Park", at 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. In lieu of flowers, donations to ALS Canada are appreciated http://www.als.ca/en/donate/memorialtribute THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 204-925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

Condolences & Memories (38 entries)

  • My deepest sympathy to you and your family Rebecca. Helder was a student in my Portuguese class. He was very friendly, with a big smile, and always very respectful. He was a pleasure to be with. Although I have since moved away and lost touch with him, I will always remember his smile and wit. Rest in Peace my friend! God Bless your Family - Posted by: Viriato Nogueira (Portuguese Teacher) on: Feb 17, 2014

  • I met Helder when he worked at Signature Homes as an assistant on site Forman. I had the pleasure of meeting this gentleman. Shortly after meeting him....there was a car seat in the back of this little truck. He couldn't have been happier. His search for innovation involving construction would lead him to further search for knowledge in the building industry. I attended many courses and seminars with him .....he loved to learn. The building industry is at a great loss to lose this great MAN. Now off to see the great architect in the sky... - Posted by: Tod boss (Co worker sire Forman ) on: Feb 08, 2014

  • Helder was one of those people who liked, who always welcomed you with his beautiful smile and good cheer. Years would go by when I wouldn't see him but when we'd meet up anywhere, his smile was always as sincere and heartfelt. He was a kind and thoughtful soul. I was lucky to have known him. My deepest sympathy to his family. - Posted by: Paula Calado (friend) on: Feb 07, 2014

  • To your family, Helder, I was so sad to hear of his passing and the pain it must bring and I hope it is short and only the happiness and joy he brought to your lives are the memories that you look back on. He was a great Dj because he listened to the people. And that attribute made him an incredible man. He will be missed I am sure by all of us who worked with him at the Pal and I extend or love of him to you his family and wish you only the best memories of your time with him as we do! God bless - Posted by: John Ross (Friend and coworker at palomino club) on: Feb 07, 2014

  • I remember... One night at a friends and family gathering, at a steak house. A big barbeque rib chow down in the middle of the long table. I remember parents saying to us "portem-se bem"... I was a kid and although he was 8 yrs older, he was just another kid whith me. Today is a sad day for me. A GRAND reference of my growing up has passed. RIP Helder! • An old friend; a dear friend in the community. We grew up together, with so many others... I remember most, though, his dignity and grace when his mother passed away. He was so thoughtful and selfless, even in his grief; kind enough to think of me, as I extended my sympathy, to let me know that, "she really liked you..." I never forgot that gesture. It was probably my last quiet conversation with him, before our life paths diverged. My deepest sympathy to his father, wife, and children. - Posted by: Sally Correia (Friend) on: Feb 06, 2014

  • Rebecca, We met briefly when we joined other ALS supporters for their annual sponsored walk in the park in 2012. By then Helder was in a wheelchair and he still participated in the event with his generous smile and enthusiasm along with your children and mother. My daughter Kaitlan informed me about Helder's passing today. I am so, so sorry. This year for the ALS walk I will be there and remembering Helder too. • Dear Family Neto, we are so very sorry for your loss. We met Helder through Olympic Builders and kept in contact with him through emails here and there to hear how he was doing after he left. His true character and integrity was evident from the very start and after that first handshake he showed genuine care and concern for us and those around him. When we attended his fundraiser at the Palomino Club, we were humbled by the number of people whose lives he had touched, again reinforcing what a good man he was. • Helder, your smile warms my heart to this moment in time. You were one of those people who always made a day brighter. I don't remember what year we shared a locker, but in getting to know you, I can say there weren't too many people who were happier or more positive than you. Our shared love of all things Van Halen, Roth or Hagar will be with me always. The night we saw DLR at Winnipeg Arena, remains one of my favourite memories, my friend. We didn't see each other too much after high school. Know this... Our friendship lives on in me; I thank you for that! My condolences and thoughts to your family. I KNOW you were an amazing Papa!! Love you, man. You can borrow "The Pony" anytime! - Posted by: Greg Mackling (High School Friend/locker partner) on: Feb 05, 2014

  • Sincerest condolences to all of Helder's family and friends. Most of the time I spent with Helder was while we were growing up together in the West End. He was a couple of years older than all the other boys in our pack. He was always so patient with us younger kids, and never hesitated to blaze a trail for the rest of us. He taught us all the things we needed to know about bikes, hockey, music, cars, and of course girls. All of us but Helder had sisters, and although he didn't have any siblings of his own, he was a big brother to all of us. It was an honor being his friend - he will be missed. - Posted by: Sam Nobre (Childhood friend, neighbour) on: Feb 05, 2014
