JOHN (PETER) PRUDEN It is with great sadness that we announce on February 5, 2014, at age 72, Peter Pruden, passed away peacefully at the Selkirk General Hospital, with his family by his side. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife and best friend of 51 years, Barbara; his beloved children Peter Jr., Brent and Cathy (Tracy) Garbutt; and his precious grandsons Noah and Theo. He will also be greatly missed by his sisters, Lynn (Bill) Arp, June Ann (Jeff) Lawson and brothers Don (Pat) and Ken Pruden, as well as numerous family members and many, many friends. Peter was predeceased by his father Charlie (1980) and his mother Maureen (2011). He was born in Selkirk on November 2, 1941 and was raised on the family farm in Petersfield. He worked at Ford Imperial Motors, as well as helping his dad on the farm. Later he bought his own land and continued to farm successfully until he retired in 2008. Peter was a natural athlete excelling at any sport he tried including baseball, golf, skiing and curling. Just recently he was so proud to have received an honorary lifetime membership to the Petersfield Curling Club. He was a mentor to many and his generosity and optimism for life will always be remembered. Peter and Barbara spent many happy years travelling to the West Coast, the Maritimes, the States and Mexico, but his greatest joy was spending time with his two grandsons Noah and Theo. Thank you to all the family and friends that showed support and encouragement to Peter during his courageous battle against cancer for the past year and a half. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice in Peter's name. A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 10 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk, Manitoba. A private family interment will take place at a later date. We love you and will miss you always. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

  • I was very saddened to hear this news. Peter was a good friend and neighbour of our family's and I will always remember his kind and gentle ways; he was a true gentleman (and a pretty fine curler too). - Posted by: Kevin Wallace (Friend and neighbour) on: Feb 10, 2014

  • My condolences to you Barb and the family. My prayers and heart go out to you. My time of knowing Peter goes back many years when we were teenagers and young men. There was many a fun weekend starting with a dance at the Petersfield hall. Jim, Murray, Peter, Terry, Brian and myself and others. Sometimes we would end up at Brackens before heading home for the night. One night on the way home someone said to pull over "cause he wanted to go to the bathroom". Well there we were, sitting in the bottom of the ditch and no one got out of the car, so Peter, who was driving, got back on the road and away we went in a cloud of dust. Turns out we were in the bottom of the ditch another time or two on the Petersfield road before we all got home. May you take some comfort in those good memories, Barb. GOD be with you. - Posted by: Bruce & Rae Avison (ol' friends) on: Feb 09, 2014

  • Dear Barb & kids; We are so, so sorry to hear about Pete's passing away. With the news came a flood of memories but you folks often come to mind when we think of the old days. Just on Sunday last I was telling some company that we had, about a time we were all going to a dance in Petersfield hall. It was winter & we were in Pete's car & I'm pretty sure we were on our way to pick up Murry. Anyway we turned the corner to Murry's place & there was a drift across the road so Pete sped up to get through it. We went as far as we could but got stuck. It turned out to be about 1/4 of a mile long. Murry saw us coming so got the tractor & started digging through from his end & we started from our end with a grain shovel that Pete had in the trunk. The long & the short is we made it. Do you remember that Pete & I liked to go sking once in a while, Barb? Well somehow I ended up with Pete's skies & I still have them up on the rafters in a grainery along with mine. Every time I go into that grainery I think of the good old days. Barb & family, know that our thoughts are with you & we would really like to hear from you.
