ROBERT GLEN THOMPSON With deep sadness, we announce the sudden passing of Glen, aged 48, after a short, but tenacious battle with cancer. Glen passed away peacefully, surrounded by friends and family at St. Boniface Hospital on Tuesday, February 11, 2014. Glen is survived by his parents Dave and Risé and two brothers Brent (spouse Melanie and children Aaron, Brittanie, Kiera and Liam), and Brad (spouse Jacqueline and children Aidan and Owen). He will also be missed by his best friend Gordon Sims (Suzanne) and family as well as his aunts, uncles and cousins. Glen was a kind, gentle man who did not judge or criticize and was always able to see the best side of humanity. His early years were spent in Kirkfield Westwood where he attended Bedson Elementary. After moving to Wildwood Park in Fort Garry, Glen went to Oakenwald Elementary, Viscount Alexander Junior High and Vincent Massey Collegiate. He also attended Theatre Studies at UBC, the Film and Theatre School in Vancouver, Comedy at Humber College in Ontario and stunt training in the United States as well as achieving a B.Sc. in Biology at the University of Manitoba. Glen was an actor and well known in the Manitoba film and theatre community, having performed in numerous productions as an actor, voice over artist and stunt man. He recently developed a new interest in singing in the World Village Gospel Choir in Winnipeg. Glen travelled extensively around the world on five continents from the far north to the tropics. He relished in learning new cultures and experiencing the natural environments everywhere he went. Glen loved hockey. He played on several teams and skated whenever and wherever he could, from the Red and La Salle Rivers to many rinks across Winnipeg especially enjoying shinny at the Wildwood and Fort Garry community clubs. He will be lovingly remembered by his many friends and as a Big Brother to Matthew. The family extends their thanks and sincere gratitude to the staff on 6E at St. Boniface Hospital for their compassion and dedicated care and for the help of our neighbours during this difficult time. A celebration of Glen's life will be held at the Fort Garry United Church, 600 Point Road in Fort Garry on Sunday, February 16 at 2:00 p.m. A reception will follow at the Wildewood Club, 761 North Drive in Fort Garry. Special thanks to ushers Geoff Cowie, Jeff Dougan and Andy Tough and to Neil Weisensel for the musical arrangement.. In lieu of flowers, donations in Glens memory may be made to Shakespeare in the Ruins (Y300-393 Portage Ave. R3B 3H1), CancerCare Manitoba Foundation Melanoma (1160-675 McDermot Ave. R3E 0V9) or to a charity of your choice. If wealth is measured in friends, Glen was the richest man on earth. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 204-925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

Thinking about you tonight, Glen. No special reason, no anniversary. I just miss you terribly. - Posted by: Sarah (Friend) on: Mar 06, 2014

My parents have been close friends with Dave and Risé for many years. When I was young our two families, both with three kids fairly close in age, spent time together at holidays and in the summer - for New Years, at the Thompson's cottage, and at each others' homes. I have such great memories of that time and of how kind, sweet and fun to be with Glen was. The Thompsons are such a lovely and welcoming family. While I hadn't seen Glen for many years, my parents kept me up to date on how he was doing. I am so sad to hear that he passed away, but I am happy to know that he pursued his dreams, and lived his life to the fullest and with passion always. My deepest sympathies. - Posted by: Debbie Milton (Family friend) on: Mar 03, 2014

We were very saddened to hear of your son's passing. We thoroughly enjoyed being in the audience whenever Glen was performing. We trust the loving memories you hold in your heart of the life you shared together will bring you solace during the dark and difficult days ahead. Sincerely, Ken and Sandra - Posted by: Sandra Stuart and Ken Friesen (theatre fans) on: Feb 27, 2014

Dave and Rise, our sincere condolences. Glen was always our boys' first choice when asked "Who do you want to have as a sitter tonight?" Though we had not seen Glen for many years, reading here of his positive impact on those who knew him as an adult, comes as no surprise. - Posted by: Earl and Pat Ray (Neighbours, from many years ago) on: Feb 18, 2014

I had the wonderful privilege to have worked with Glen in our younger years when we toured together for 4 months through northern Manitoba with PTE's Youth Tour group...one of the plays was "A Prairie Boy's Winter" which involved lively hockey scenes - Glen most certainly did love that game! I didn't even know how to hold a hockey stick properly...thank you, Glen for your patient tutelage! Some of my fondest life memories were formed during those months traveling and working with Glen...his warm, kind, gentle, humble personality and super-duper sense of humour touched me deeply. I feel truly blessed to have shared a part of life's journey with Glen. My deepest condolences to family and friends. - Posted by: Judith Mate (fellow actor) on: Feb 18, 2014

Glen was a truly wonderful person both onstage and off. His warmth, generosity and good humour were as genuine as they were boundless, and could not help but put you at absolute ease. I was only lucky enough to work with Glen on two occasions, but am enormously grateful for the all-too-short time I was able to spend in his company. Goodbye, Glen. Whether against the Capulets or the armies of France, it was an honour to have fought by your side. I am very lucky to have known you, and our Winnipeg community is a sadder place for your absence. - Posted by: Ariel Levine (Fellow actor) on: Feb 17, 2014

Dave, Rise, Brent and Brad. I was gobsmacked when I heard this terrible news. Not sure if you remember me, but I grew up on Raquette and played golf with and chummed around with Glen in our Bedson days. I was actually in your house in Wildwood when we heard the news of the passing of Elvis. I have fond memories of Glen from when we were young. He turned in to an amazing and talented adult which is a tribute to you both. May God comfort your hearts and keep his memory in all of ours. - Posted by: Paul McLeod (Elementary school friend) on: Feb 16, 2014

On stage and off, Glen's quirky humour and wide open heart warmed those around him. His joy in living life was infectious. Even the briefest moment, bumping into him at an event or on the street, I couldn't help but fall into his wide smile, and continue the day feeling better about the world. He will be deeply missed. - Posted by: Robert Metcalfe (Colleague) on: Feb 16, 2014

I was fortunate and privileged to play Ivy to Glen's Little Charles in August: Osage County. The sadness and sweetness he emanated onstage simultaneously broke my heart and filled it with joy. I'll treasure the moments we spent together onstage and wish there had been more of them off. I always loved to watch his work, and would try to dissect his special brand of funny. I am so sorry that I'm not in Winnipeg presently to mourn with his family, many friends and theatre colleagues, but I will be there in spirit, grieving and celebrating the life of a very special guy. - Posted by: Miriam Smith (Colleague) on: Feb 16, 2014

I have not seen Glen since high school, and yet this week learning of his passing through mutual acquaintances on Facebook, I too have felt impacted by his passing. Maybe it is the realization that someone I used to go to school with and was the same age as me has left us and I have become aware of how precious life is. Maybe it is the recognition that a genuinely good person who touched the lives of many people has passed. It is obvious that the relatively short life he had, he lived fully. My thoughts and prayers are with the Thompson family and Glen's close friends. - Posted by: Leah Schroeder - fornerly of 528 Manchester Blvd. S, (Went to school with Glen, Oakenwald, Viscount & VMC) on: Feb 15, 2014

To the best friend who has always been there to bring laughter and joy when life got chaotic. Glen had an uncanny way of taking stress out of life just by a simple car ride and a Slurpee. Uncle Glen always kept Nina smiling and laughing. Nika had big smiles for Uncle Glen with her big blue eyes lighting up when he came over to visit. Glen you will be sadly missed but never forgotten. Your spirit of adventure, your gift of acting and devotion to friends has taught me so much. You will live on and I am glad we spent so much time together. Until we meet again, keep acting, traveling and have endless hockey games. My thoughts and prayers go out to my extended family, The Thompsons who have always treated me as family. Much Love, Andy - Posted by: Andy Tough (Close Friend) on: Feb 15, 2014

I was never lucky enough to work with Glen, and many in our community knew him better. But such was his warmth, kindness and humour that it felt as though I knew him all my life. He was a lovely man and I miss him. - Posted by: Megan McArton (fellow actor) on: Feb 15, 2014

I have known Glen for, well, I don't know how many years, but I do know him to be one of the finest Canadians ever. I also know his death is a cruel loss to all of us who knew him and to all the others who, in the future, will never have the benefit of knowing him. However, though his life was not as long as we all could have wished, it was most surely, well-lived and appreciated. - Posted by: Lee Treilhard (Friemd) on: Feb 15, 2014

Whenever Glen came by to pick up my brother Jeff Dougan he always had a huge smile on his face and always asked after me and my family. I liked him for the kind person that he was. He will be missed. - Posted by: Shawna Giesbrecht (Friend) on: Feb 14, 2014

I had the privilege of working with Glen on two shows, as his stage manager. He was always prepared, professional, willing to listen and to learn. I will miss his generous spirit, his smile and his (always) obvious enjoyment of life! We are truly poorer for his loss. - Posted by: Sylvia Fisher (Colleague in the arts.) on: Feb 14, 2014

Glen's family and mine have been friends for our whole lives. We got together for years in the summer weather and would have a large picnic in the park, play games and catch up on the latest news. I am so proud of Glen's talent on stage and in the movies. He got to live his dream and that is very special. - Posted by: Christine Peers (family friend) on: Feb 14, 2014

After High School, Glen and Gord went backpacking through Europe. Their first stop was Holland and having recently met some of my Dutch relatives decided to visit them. Well, they ended up staying a month. My relatives have never forgotten Glen and Gord and ask about them whenever we are in touch. I notified my relatives of Glen's passing and a long email appeared in my inbox. I won't translate the whole thing but needless to say these two young men had left their mark on their hearts. My aunt spoke about getting a kick out of watching them go biking, and what a pleasure it was to have them around. She said that when they left, she felt she had gained two friends. She wrote that despite the years and miles since, she too is heartbroken at knowing that Glen is no longer with us. She, as do I, extend our deepest sympathies. I am shocked to discover that Glen and I only worked together once. My heart tells me we must have shared the stage a dozen times or more. But I think that feeling is a testament to our theatre/film/stunt community in Winnipeg. It's a family...and our community has lost a family member. My memories of Glen in the rehearsal hall and on set (of every hockey movie made in Manitoba ever) are of a quiet, confident, kind and hard-working artist. He was always positive and full of smiles...something that is essential and welcome in our line of work. I am sad that work has taken me out of town at this important time in our community and I want to send my love and remembrances to Glen's family, friends and colleagues from afar. Much love.
