STANLEY JOSEPH STEMKOSKI It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved dad, grandpa and brother, Stanley Joseph Stemkoski of Elm Creek, MB; at his home doing what he loved watching hockey. Stan will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his son Brian Stemkoski (Verna); his daughter Sharon Yakubicka (Barry); grandchildren, Wendy Lindsay (Gardner), Mandy and Eric Yakubicka; and Sheena Stemkoski. He is also survived by his sister Adeline Popiel; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Stan was predeceased by his wife of 39 years, Mildred Stemkoski (1999); his parents, Joseph and Caroline Stemkoski; and in-laws, William and Grace Mainland. Dad loved to watch Hockey Night in Canada and the Winnipeg Jets play. You had to time your phone calls when hockey was on TV. Dad also loved to listen to his old time music on cassettes and the Saturday Night Polka Party on CFRY. In his younger days, Dad played hockey, as well as coached Brian's hockey team. In 1954, Dad started working at Swifts/Canada Packers, where he met mom. They married in 1960 and started their family in 1962 when Brian was born, with their daughter Sharon to follow a year later. Dad then went on to work at Manitoba and Winnipeg Cold Storage, then to Fresh Water Fish in Transcona, and later in Selkirk, MB until his retirement in 1999. His other full time job was the family farm in Elm Creek, where he worked along side his Dad and in later years with Brian. Dad enjoyed life on the farm especially his garden. There were always weeds to pull. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today, Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Corpus Christi Church, 5819 Henderson Hwy. Interment to follow in the parish cemetery. His pallbearers are his grandson Eric Yakubicka, his nephews, Raymond, Donnie and Larry Popiel, his cousins, Doug Stemkoski and Bruce Stemken and Cliff Popiel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. "Rest in Peace, Dad" Cropo Funeral Chapel 204-586-8044

  • I remember Stanley very well from our hockey playing days at the Donald School rink in Narol. Many of us used to gather there after supper and play hockey. Stan was often the goalkeeper. He was always the first to arrive at the hockey shack and got the fire going in the wood stove, and then started to clean the rink as the rest of us arrived. Also I recall that he often accompanied his Father Joe on threshing gangs, where he either drove a tractor or a team of horses pulling a hay rack and picking up stooks of wheat to feed into the threshing machine. I was very saddened to hear of his passing. Stanley was a good man who always treated us younger kids with respect. - Posted by: Bob Malazdrewich (Acquaintance) on: Mar 08, 2014
