JOHN EDWARD OZUK December 24, 1915 - March 1, 2014 It is with heavy hearts today that we announce the passing of our dad, grandfather and great-grandfather, at the Seven Oaks Hospital. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by two of his children and his many grandchildren. Dad is survived by sons Larry (Diane), John (Cindy) and daughter Cheryl. Dad was predeceased by his wife Betty (of 70 years in 2010); brother Walter; sisters Mary and Anne. Dad led an interesting life and did many things from commercial fishing, farming and then school bus driving for the Evergreen School Division. It was this last job that he enjoyed the most as he loved people and made lots of friends with the students who were on his route. Being one of Jehovah's Witnesses, Dad enjoyed and spent many hours talking to others about God's Kingdom and the hope the Bible held out for those who have died. His favorite scripture is found at Revelation 21:4 where it speaks of how God will wipe out every tear from their eyes. While in Arborg dad spent many years as an elder in the local congregation. Dad was always a kind and generous person and would go out of his way to help others. He was also very humorous in his way and if someone were to ask his age he would say "he was ancient" and would also make up his humorous rhymes. He also loved to play his harmonica and if you walked down the hallway of Middlechurch Home you could hear him playing for staff or residents. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the staff on A2 where dad and mom had resided for approximately seven years. They accepted them as their own and treated them as if they were members of their own family. For this we say thank you. Also thank you to Gilbart Funeral Home. Since dad outlived all his former friends, he requested there be no formal service. Cremation has taken place and there will be a private burial at a later date. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

  • Think about you and miss you and grandma everyday. - Posted by: Lorne (Grandson) on: May 03, 2015

  • Dad was a very special person who made allowances and excuses for even the most undeserving person, no matter how they treated him or what they did. Yes, he was a most forgiving man. Living half a country away I was still able to see my father often and to talk to him. Diane and Larry looked after him so well..as children should. I was able to speak with him everytime he was at their place. Diane making it possible because she took him home so often. I would get a play by play as Dad would be in the cookie jar or candy dish through out the call. He may at times not have recognized his 6 grandchildren or their children, but they all have fond memories of their visits to Grampa, him making memories for them with his mouth organ, songs and many stories. Oh yes..don't forget playing pool! I know I never beat him! His life memories will linger on thru all those that made the time to spend with him. We are the fortunate ones that were blessed to call him Dad, Grampa and Friend, to have physically spent his last years with him. Miss you Big Time Dad. - Posted by: Cheryl O'Connell (daughter) on: Mar 11, 2014

  • The nicest man you could ever meet! Grandpa was always happy and telling his funny jokes, and rhymes. Loved cookies & candies. Always up for a good game of pool , especially when his great grandson Hunter came for a visit from Vancouver:) We will all miss you grandpa! - Posted by: Melinda Tarves (Granddaughter ) on: Mar 11, 2014

  • When you hugged Grampa, it was like hugging an Oak Tree ..... a strong man with a Gentle, loving Heart. When you danced an Old-Time Waltz with him, you knew you had really danced ..... He and I would have a little Waltz around the kitchen after Dinner, when we came to visit him and Gramma out in Arborg. He was always cheerful with a warm smile. Over 40 years ago, he welcomed me into the Ozuk Family as John's wife, to help raise his two children who had lost their Mother. He was kind and respectful and never said an unkind word to me. When we added a daughter to our Family, he treated all our children the same ...... Chocolate Pancakes for everyone !!! He was always happy to see us whenever we visited, showing hospitality, offering us whatever they had, and then saying "Help Yourself". He was so glad we were raising his Grandchildren with Bible standards to worship their loving Creator, Jehovah God. When Grampa said the Prayer of Thanks before Dinner, it was as if no one else was in the room, just a humble man talking to his Creator and asking for the requests of his heart, especially "God's Kingdom to come and his Will to take place on Earth, as in heaven." (MATTHEW 6:9-11) He was an example to all of us, having lived a good, faithful life. He is now sleeping until the time about which Jesus said, "Do not be amazed by this because the hour is coming when all those in the Memorial Tombs will hear his voice and come out" to a resurrection in a beautiful restored Paradise earth to be reunited with his Family and Friends. (JOHN 5: 28, 29) "God will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and Death will be no more, neither will mourning, nor outcry, nor pain be any more." (REVELATION 21: 3,4) Grampa wanted nothing more than for his Family and friends to learn the Truth found in the Bible, and choose to live their lives worshipping Jehovah God. If you would like to honour this man, take some time to listen to the message of Jehovah's Witnesses when they call or go to www.jw.org. They would be happy to study the Bible with you free of charge, so that you can learn about the wonderful hope JOHN OZUK had and lived his life for. - Posted by: CINDY OZUK (daughter-in-law / wife of JOHN OZUK ) on: Mar 10, 2014

  • I was one of John's passengers on his school bus. I remember my very first day of school - I was very nervous until I saw his big smile and knowing that I had the "best seat on the bus" helped as well. He had everyone's respect - and it was given as well. I remember when we gave him a suprise retirement party. I said I had to be dropped at my cousin's house. When he came around the house and saw everyone his jaw dropped. He said that we shouldn't have made such a fuss over him but the smile on his face said otherwise. He was a great man and will be missed. - Posted by: Melody (former bus student) () on: Mar 06, 2014

  • Uncle John lived a lifetime of many changes and I am sure he enjoyed it all/my memories are that of the farm/visiting along with other family members..the music playing and all of us "kids" running around outside in the dark...also the stops in Arborg...I'm sure the smell of donuts were also the calling as no one could or can to this day make donuts like Auntie Betty...wonderful times were had and I very often think of those times. Diane you were such a big part of their lives..so kind and I am sure that you and Larry will miss the times spent with Uncle John....he lived a good life.. • Larry and Cheryl. I will always remember your Dad with a Song in his heart and a Smile on his Face. He'd play either a polka or kolomayka on his harmonica and it made me just want to get up and dance. The "Chocolate Candy Man" as I would call him will be "missed but will always be remembered as the "Gentle Giant"..... My thoughts and prayers are with you and your Family .
