MANUEL PEDRO CHAGAS Peacefully and with deep sadness we announce the passing of our "Pai" and "Avo" with his family by his side on March 3, 2014, at the age of 77, at the Health Sciences Centre. Manuel Pedro leaves with great pride his wife Lealdina Heleno, of 49 years of marriage, daughter Elizabeth Heleno, son Pedro Antonio Heleno, daughter-in-law Lucy, joys of his life grandchildren Victoria Marie, Julia Teresa, Marco Antonio, Matteo Manuel, and his sister Teresa. He is predeceased by his brother Joaquim. Manuel was born in Villa de Frades, Beja, Baixo Alentejo, Portugal on August 6, 1936. He spent his childhood and adolescence there before moving to Lisbon to attend the Technical Collage at Material de Guerra, training towards a Mechanist. In 1961 he ventured off to Holland and settled in Rotterdam working as a Mechanist on food production equipment at Calve where he remained until 1965. In 1964 he married Lealdina and they began their lives together. Manuel Pedro arrived in Winnipeg with Lealdina in 1965. He was a proud employee of Dominion Bridge from 1969 to 1995 as Machinist, X-Ray Welder and Fitter Welder. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Avenue with Rev. Sam Argenziano celebrant. We were all fortunate and blessed to have recently celebrated this past 2013 - 2014 Holiday season as a family in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Manuel Pedro enjoyed every minute with his family and friends. You were a strong, courageous, joyful and a great mentor in all of our lives. You will remain in our hearts forever... Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • We are very saddened by the news of Mr. Chagas' passing. Our family and the Chagas family were close when the "kids" were younger. Both my father, uncle and Mr. Chagas took the same path of leaving Portugal to work in Holland and then immigrating to Winnipeg, Canada in the 1960's. The wonderful memories your husband, dad & grandpa left behind should help you deal with the loss and to carry him forever in your thoughts and lives. Our sympathies to Sra. Lealdina, Lisa, Pedro & Lucy. - Posted by: Anna Camilo Fernandes & family (Family Friend) on: Mar 05, 2014

  • Our family was both honoured and privileged to spend time with Manuel this past New Year in Puerto Vallarta. The continuos smile on Manuel's face was priceless! Rest in peace dear Manuel - you are free from pain! - Posted by: Keith & Jan, Alex & Jen, Curtis & Jen, and Kenny & Chantelle - the Middleton Clan (Family friends) on: Mar 05, 2014
