Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Coincidentally, we learned that Veronika Schierling died in March this year. My mother Gertrud is Veronika's cousin and the same age. 40 years ago, a year after our wedding, my husband Ralf and I went to Canada to visit Veronika and her siblings. During this time we stayed with Veronica and her husband Martin in Winnipeg. They welcomed us very friendly. On the farm they organized a campfire with picnic, we were at the Lake Gimli and much more. Veronika had lots of ideas of what we should see and do. When our holidays came to an end, we were rather sad. We always hoped to see her again what is unfortunately no longer possible for us now. We lost a lovable person. Along with us mourns my mother Gertrud Szemeitzke, Witten and her sister Toni Janning, Rorup. • Veronika was a longtime friend of my mother, Christa. Mom has shared many fond memories of working with Veronika in her father's convenience store located at what is now the 7-11 store on Ness Avenue. Later in life, when Veronika and Martin moved to an acreage in the Gimli area, my brothers and I relished trips to "the farm" to play with the cows, the dogs, the rabbits and the countless kittens in the barn. These were among my fondest childhood memories and have had a lasting influence. I attribute my love of animals and decision to live outside of the city in great part to my beloved "Aunt Veronika". I will always remember her as a cheerful, vibrant and dynamic woman with a can-do attitude and a strong believer in the healing power of nature. Rest in peace dear aunt.
