ANDREW JOHN RUTHERFORD March 26, 1922 March 6, 2014 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Andy Rutherford at the age of 91. Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 69 years Anne, his two daughters; Jane MacDiarmid and Joann Crittall, grandchildren; Jennifer (Eric) Schraml, Andrew (Careen) Crittall, Paul (Darla) MacDiarmid, Sara (Chris) Yanke, Thomas (Rebecca) Crittall and Kevin (Lindsay) MacDiarmid, 13 great-grandchildren and four sisters; Dora Grant, Isabelle (Don) Reid and Rosemary (Don) Gormley. Andy was born in Colborne, Ontario on March 26, 1922, the only son of Charles and Helen Rutherford. He received his early education at a country school and then attended high school in Colborne. After graduating from normal school (teacher's college) in Peterborough, he went to Toronto and joined the air force in 1942. He was stationed at several airports, training to be a pilot and in June 1943 he was transferred to McDonald Airport in Manitoba. There he met Anne Paul and they were married in 1945. After his discharge and the end of the war he and Anne stayed in Manitoba and made their home in Portage La Prairie. Andy farmed for several years and then took over the business of Ideal Moving and Storage. In 1964 he sold this business and worked in the Eaton's store for a short time, he then joined Monarch Life Insurance Company and worked there until his retirement in 1988. Andy was a people person and was always ready to offer a helping hand to anyone in need. In 1991 he received the Citizen of the Year Award. Andy and Anne spent many happy summers at their cottage on Delta Beach. They so enjoyed all the friends and relatives that came to call. Andy loved to fly; he spent many happy hours in his plane during his younger years. Later in life he took up sailing and sailed with friends on Lake Manitoba. After retiring, he and Anne traveled south to Texas and Florida for winter holidays in their motor home. In later years they took winter holidays in Victoria, BC. Andy loved to travel and always wanted to call in and visit with everyone along the way. A funeral service to celebrate Andy's life will take place on Friday, March 14, 2014 at Trinity United Church in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba at 11:00 a.m. followed by a reception in the lower hall of the church. • Precious Memories....Precious Memories when someone you love becomes a memory, that memory becomes a treasure. This borrowed thought made me think of the zillions of "treasures" Andy has created and how fortunate his grandchildren and great-grandchildren are to have known him and spent so much time with him and Anne. Their 69 yrs of marriage are an example of true love and it is possible with patience and understanding. We always looked forward to their visits to Thunder Bay to visit over a cup of tea at Joanne's house. They welcomed us so warmly at their residence on our way out to BC in 2010 and invited us for another visit on the way home. We didn't return home that way and regretted that another opportunity had not yet come along. I gave them photos of our grandchildren but don't know where they would have put them in an apt already overflowing with photos of family, family pets and family celebrations. You could only feel surrounded by love whenever you were with them. Our heartfelt sympathy goes to all the family and especially Anne. I'm so glad that Joann and Jane are on hand to help through these sad days and later on as life sorts itself out. Love to all. - Posted by: Linda & Ted Boon (Family Friends) on: Mar 09, 2014
