NICHOLAS SOKAL December 6, 1926 - March 8, 2014 Nick Sokal passed away on March 8, 2014 at Concordia Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 31 years, Joanna, brothers Alex, George and Bill, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents George and Mary Sokal, brothers Steve, John and Henry, and sisters Katie and Mary. Nick was born on Saint Nicholas day, December 6, 1926, the second youngest of nine children, and he grew up in the farming community of Springfield. Although he only had elementary school education, he and his brothers embarked on owning a farm equipment dealership in Winnipeg. Nick was an honourable man, and his handshake was his bond. He was as honest as he was tall, and he made many friends through his business dealings. Nick's exceptional generosity and unconditional love were always appreciated by his nephews and nieces. Nick loved the outdoors, and his home grounds were meticulously groomed all summer. He and Joanna prided themselves with growing beautiful flowers and exceptional vegetables, and the Sokal duo took many awards at the Transcona Garden Club's annual horticultural shows each August. For his efforts and his ongoing support of the club's activities, Nick was awarded an honorary life membership in the club in 2005. Nick was quite the handyman and could repair anything. His common sense approach to problem solving enabled him to design and create any equipment and parts needed. Only small springs go on weeping while the dark wood hush and cease. Even the garden flowers are sleeping. Sleep then in peace my dearest Nick. All my love for ever more. Your wife, Joanna. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 14, 2014 at Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church, 710 Roanoke St., Transcona. Flowers gratefully declined. If you would like to honour Nick's memory, please donate to a charity of your choice. Funeral Arrangements in Care of Wheeler Funeral Home, Cemetery & Crematorium 1800 Day Street 204-224-1525
