Date of Passing: Mar 12, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryELINOR MARY KARTZMARK May 16, 1926 March 12, 2014 Peacefully on March 12, 2014 at the Selkirk and District Hospital, Elinor passed away at the age of 87. She is survived by her son Richard (Penny) Kartzmark; grandchildren Kimberly, Kalee and Kyle; brother Robert (Betty) Kartzmark and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Mary and Martin Kartzmark; brothers Martin (Jerry) and Roy (Olga). Elinor was born in Selkirk MB. Mom lived her entire life at the corner of Donald Rd. and McPhillips Rd. in St. Andrews. Her early schooling at St. Andrews School was followed in 1943 to 1944 by a year of teaching on permit at Sunrise School in Mapleton. Her time spent at Mapleton was a highlight for her and was always fondly remembered. She was very proud of growing up in a rural setting that did not include running water or any modern conveniences that we take for granted today. Mom's parents left Winnipeg with the idea of becoming self-sufficient in 1922. They were successful market gardeners who took great pride in growing vegetables. This self-sufficiency was a quality that Mom developed in herself by way of obtaining her Doctorate of Chemistry from the University of Manitoba. Mom was very fortunate to be mentored by Dr. Campbell while at the University of Manitoba. She embarked on a long and distinguished career in the Chemistry Department at the University of Manitoba. To achieve a longstanding ambition Mom began a search for an adopted child in 1952. This flew in the face of officialdom for that period but was accomplished in 1955 when her son Richard was born. Travel was a big part of Mom's life. As a youngster she went on many family fishing trips to Lac du Bonnet. As time went on she travelled extensively through North America, South America and Europe. Mom always looked forward to many family visits and reunions. Family was very important to Mom. Photography was another passion in her life. Mom also enjoyed sewing and making things for her grandchildren. Mom was very generous to people and organizations who were important to her. She enjoyed the many friendships that she made with her Altrusa Club. Mom enjoyed the companionship of many cats and dogs through the years. Mom always expressed her extreme gratitude to her mother and father who provided a home at St. Andrews and early childhood nurturing for Richard. She was also grateful to her three brothers and their families and to many supportive friends. Supreme gratitude to Margaret and special appreciation to Elinoranne for being Mom's taxi and sounding board. To Richard, Penny, Kimberly, Kalee and Kyle. Thank you for much enjoyment and fulfillment. Thank you to the many people who supported and cared for Mom during the past year. The compassion of the staff at Beausejour, Selkirk and Grace Hospitals, Deer Lodge and Selkirk and District Home Care was greatly appreciated and will never be forgotten. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 15, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel in Selkirk. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or a charity of one's choice. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

I am her first female graduate student --- studied under her direction for my Master of Science degree. Her patience and warm, considerate manners helped me to stay with the hard work and eventually graduate with her proud approval. Her e-mails and her kind voice have been greatly missed. - Posted by: Yuen Cheng (A student for MSc in Physical Chemistry, in Chemistry Dept., University of Manitoba) on: Jun 01, 2014

Eleanor was a wonderful colleague and a respected scientist. She was a great first year teacher and the students appreciated her special efforts for them in particular. She could even handle the 1st year engineers. I welcomed her ability to solve the problems that we gave these students as I certainly had difficulties with them at times. I also remember vividly one wonderful event when we were both in Quebec City for a conference. At the end of the conference I learned that my father-in-law had died and that there was to be a service in Toronto. Because of flight problems Eleanor was on an earlier flight and I was on a later flight to Toronto which would mean that I would miss the service. Eleanor immediately gave up her seat so that I could make Toronto in good time. [A different time so that this was possible!!!] All the family appreciated my presence and my wife especially appreciated Eleanor's gift to us. Our best wishes to all of the family. - Posted by: Art Chow (colleague) on: Mar 16, 2014

Elinor, you were an amazing person - a pioneer in many areas. I remember being your "hairdresser" during my teen years and attending Rainbow Stage and Manitoba Theatre productions with you when I lived in Winnipeg. Your kindness and caring ways will be remembered by many. Rest in peace Dear Lady. Janey LeBLANC Kamloops, B.C. - Posted by: JaneJJJjJaney (kkkkk) on: Mar 15, 2014
