MARIA GUZZI It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our mother and nonna Maria Guzzi (nee Abiusi) on Friday March 21, 2014. Maria will be sadly missed by her son Frank, daughter-in-law Connie Russo, and grandsons David and Stefan. She was predeceased by her husband Francesco in February 2013, and son Giacomino (Jack) in February 1979. Mom is survived by her brother Emilio (Sara) Abiusi, brother-in-law Mario Anastasio, and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins in Winnipeg, Montreal, and Italy. She is predeceased by her parents Giacomo and Anna Abiusi, sister Giacomina Anastasio, and brother Antonio Abiusi. Mom was born on February 25, 1934 in Miglierina, Calabria, Italy, and came to Winnipeg in 1959. She married Francesco in June of 1961, and together they were happily married for 51 years. Mom initially worked as a seamstress in the 1960s, and then spent time raising her family. She later worked at Hanford Drewitt, as a tailor's assistant until she retired in 1993. Throughout her life, Mom made many friends and enjoyed their company. She was a fantastic cook and enjoyed making huge holiday feasts. Her specialties were her desserts, especially amaretti cookies and lemon cannoli. During Mom and Dad's retirement, they enjoyed traveling with family and friends, and looking after their grandsons. Mom was extremely proud of how David and Stefan have grown into caring, intelligent young adults. Following Dad's passing, Mom moved into Lindenwood Terrace, where she enjoyed taking up new activities and meeting new friends. The family would like to thank all the staff and all of Mom's new friends for making her stay there so enjoyable. Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Saturday, March 29, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Parish Church, 510 River Avenue with Rev. Fr. Sam Argenziano presiding, viewing in church will begin at 10:00 a.m. Entombment will follow Mass in the Chapel of Eternal Memories Mausoleum at Waverley Memorial Gardens, 1501 Waverley St. Active Pallbearers are Jack Abiusi, Danny Anastasio, James Anastasio, Tony Anastasio, Adam Masi, and Mark Russo. Honorary Pallbearer is Marco Guzzi. During the season of Lent, flowers will not remain in the church and are gratefully declined. Donations may be made to the Victoria General Hospital Foundation in Mom's memory, 2340 Pembina Hwy, Winnipeg, MB, R3T 2E8. I started working at Lindenwood Terrace as of the end of Oct as a Dining Room Server. It was a great honor to meet & serve Maria her meals, at lunch & dinner times. Her smile, her warm hello always, able to speak a few words in Italian & spoil her with extra was such a reward. She touched everyone in her special way, & was always so grateful for everything we did for her. She loved to sing, laugh, tease with the staff. We always looked forward to her arriving in the dining room. She was a remarkable fun loving human being that will be so sadly missed by all your lives she touched, she is with our Lord now in His arms & will always be in my heart. I will truly miss her.
