Born: Aug 04, 1931
Date of Passing: Mar 23, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWINNIFRED PETERSON August 4, 1931 - March 23, 2014 It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Winnifred Eva Peterson at the Victoria General Hospital. Winnie was predeceased by her beloved husband Edward in 2003. She is survived by her three children, Tom (Sarah), Doug (Cathy) and Janet (Greg); six grandchildren, Rob, Keith, Jeff (Megan), Stacey (Alan), Shelley (Sean), and Shawna (Curtis), and three great-grandchildren, Jeremy (Marlee), Madissen and Scott. She is also survived by her brother Alfred (Esther) and her sister Joyce from Vernon, BC, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mom was born at the Grace Hospital and grew up in St. James. She married Dad on April 19, 1952 and resided for six years in St. Vital, after which they found their forever home and together they settled in Transcona in 1958 until Dad's passing in 2003. Mom continued to live in their Harvard Avenue house until the fall of 2011 when she decided to downsize. Through the years Mom worked for several companies including Great West Life, Transcona News, Bev-A-Ready Food Services and the most recent, from which she retired in 1996, was Labelle's Printers. Back in the 1970s Mom bowled in a league every Thursday evening. It was there she met a group of Crazy' ladies and together they formed lifelong friendships, going on their annual trip to Gull Lake for a weekend full of fun and adventure. In 1974 Mom and Dad joined other family members at Arnolds campsite', not far from Lac du Bonnet and created our family summer home for weekends and vacations for years to come. There were countless card games of 31', Canasta, Yahtzee and Scrabble. Crossword and jigsaw puzzles and most of all BINGO' were favourites of Moms. Every Wednesday night was bingo night with a fine group of friends. Over the past three years, Mom's health was a bit of a struggle. She was in and out of the hospital a few times, which inspired us in seeing the very strong person that she was. She wanted to be here, and so she stayed...struggle after struggle. She had currently been living at Riverwood Square-Harmony Court and we would like to thank all the staff and companions who loved her and took care of her, although she would often say "I can take care of myself". They let her take care of herself, but they were there for companionship and assistance if she needed it. Although her current stay in the hospital was for one day, the family wishes to extend their appreciation to the staff at Victoria Hospital for their care and compassion. A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 4 at 1:00 p.m. at the Wheeler Funeral Home, Cemetery & Crematorium, 1800 Day St. with Reverend Helen Kennedy presiding. Interment to follow at Transcona Cemetery. The sun rising will remind us of the warmth of your love. Geraniums blooming will remind us of your love for life. Our trials and tribulations will remind us of how strong willed you were. There is a part of you in each and every person that hears or reads this and we can all be so honoured you were a part of our lives. We will always love you mom. We will carry you with us each day in our hearts. We will mourn our loss but rejoice that you are in a better place sitting with Dad and other loved ones, awaiting our arrival one day. My sympathies to Doug/Cathy but also to Tom and Janet. It had been a while since I had seen your Mom but I recall clearly the pride she expressed in her children. It is truly sobering to reflect on the life of a parent and, as recollections sweep over you, may you smile at the many good times you had and the fine example your Mom set for you. My condolences during this weighty time. - Posted by: Ted Jeninga ((friend of Doug)) on: Apr 02, 2014
