I was just informed of Mr. Ferley's passing. My deepest condolences to Mr. Ferley's family. The world is a better place because of his presence in it. He was one of the strongest influences in my life and has continued to be so to this day. His skill at inspiring even the worst student, like me, was a true talent. Even 30 some years after finishing school he came to a class reunion and knew every single student by name. Mr. Ferley was undoubtedly one of the most engaging people I have ever met. As I am sure he would agree that life is precious because it ends, and sadly his has come to an end. But it was a life well spent. May God be with you forever Mr. Ferley - Posted by: Hugh Gordon (Student) on: May 05, 2014

As the family (Drohomereski) historian, he could always be counted on to keep the rest of us "in the loop" whether it was about marriages, deaths or anything else of interest, even sending newspaper clippings to my dad - Edwin. I was so sorry to hear of Lorne's passing. Lorne was one of the most wonderful people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I will always remember his quick wit, his love of learning, the way he truly listened when you spoke with him, his total absolute belief in everyone. I also remember that he didn't take "no" for an answer. He once hired me for a term at Archwood School. He said that he knew I could do it when I was positive I couldn't. All I remember was that I didn't want to disappoint him. To this day, I'm still not sure I was as good as Lorne believed. I wonder if he realized how many people would talk about him lovingly years after being taught by him or teaching with him. I feel honoured to have been able to call Lorne my friend. Although I am sadly unable to attend tomorrow's service, I will keep Lorne in my heart and my prayers. My deepest sympathies to Irene and family. - Posted by: Judi Broeska (Friend through teaching) on: Apr 01, 2014

I first met Mr Ferley 36 years ago at the Co-op store in St. Boniface. They were very loyal shoppers at Co-op. He was always a very nice man. His smile will be greatly missed at the 11 o'clock mass. Sincere condolences dear Elsie & family. Lorne was a most welcoming & sympathetic gentleman. I first met Lorne when he was Principal at King Edward School. I was a stranger on my way to pick up my "repaired" car before going to study for a final exam at RRC. The car wasn't ready so I went to nearby school and asked if I could study there while waiting. Mr Ferley so graciously set me up in a vacant classroom. Stress relieved by his understanding & kindness. Thank you Mr Ferley. Rest in peace & enjoy the heavenly music.. - Posted by: Jacqueline renaud (acquaintance) on: Apr 01, 2014

Mr Ferley was a teacher of mine at Nelson Mac in the early to mid 60's. He always cared for his students and never forgot any of us or our names. Amazing!! He was my son's principal at Archwood School and his granddaughter went to College Beliveau, graduating in the same class as my granddaughter. So I have bumped into him numerous times over the years. I will miss those encounters. My condolences go out to his family - the world is a sadder place without this wonderful man. - Posted by: Vivian Arpin Gibson (Former Student) on: Apr 01, 2014

My sympathies are extended to Mr Ferley's family. He was a wonderful gentleman and teacher. He treated all with respect equally. Makes me smile when I think of him because he had at one time or another all 4 of us as students. He would always ask if I was the oldest or youngest McNaughton and then call me by name. He never forgot any of us like we will never forget you, Mr Ferley. Rest in Peace Sir. - Posted by: Reva Hansen(nee McNaughton) (Former student) on: Apr 01, 2014

Dear Irene and family, Robin and I were so sad to read online of the loss of your dear Lorne. He was a wonderful, warm and compassionate person and I was privileged to have been one of his students at Nelson McIntyre. Also later in life it was wonderful that you were able to attend our wedding and we were so looking forward to meeting up again in May for the school reunion for which we were in contact with Lorne to plan our trip back to Winnipeg from down under. It won't be the same without him there. Robin and I will be in touch and try to see you while we are there. Our love to you and your family and our thoughts and prayers are with you as you farewell Lorne on Wednesday. He may be gone but will never be forgotten. Take care and see you soon. I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Ferley's passing. I met him during my very first student teacher placement at George V. He was a wonderful and welcoming principal, always conscious of making new teachers in training welcome. I met him here and there over the years, mostly at funerals, and he had such a genuinely friendly disposition. I always enjoyed the interest he took in me and anyone else he conversed with. You are in my prayers at such a sad time. - Posted by: Christine Kist (Van Cauwenberghe) (Former student teacher at George V School) on: Mar 30, 2014

I have recently retired after 37 years of employment as a microbiologist. All of my inspiration and motivation was due to Mr. Ferley's passion for science during those three short years of high school. Even after all these years, out of respect, I cannot refer to him by his first name. He will always be Mr. Ferley to me. My condolences to the family and friends of a wonderful person and teacher. - Posted by: Morris Holoka (Nelson Mac Student) on: Mar 30, 2014

I met Lorne when I became a member of Southglen Fiddlers in the late 90's. Every week Lorne would arrive at practice with a page or two of "hand written" info on play outs etc., and, if you knew Lorne, you know that every possible detail you may have needed, was on that paper. Lorne was very involved with Southglen Fiddlers as our "booking agent", as well as our "spokesman". I got to work directly with Lorne on the constitution for the Manitoba Fiddle Assoc. and must say he was the most meticulous man I ever met. Lorne was also a key person for the MFA "Wall of Fame". I loved his dedication and work ethic. Thanks Lorne for helping to keep fiddling alive in Manitoba. - Posted by: Larry Martineau (Friend, member Southglen Fiddlers, founding president Manitoba Fiddle Association) on: Mar 30, 2014

Lorne was a true gentleman and friend. From a firm handshake, and a smile you knew from the beginning that he was genuine. His passion for learning and music knew no bounds. We will treasure his gift for remembering names, and faces along with him taking time to converse with many. His gift to truly connect with you was beyond compare. We will miss him. If it wasn't for Lorne I wouldn't have joined the Southglen Fiddlers where he was a huge influence. Our sincerest condolences to Irene, Maureen, Mike, Keith and family. I consider myself fortunate to have worked as Lorne's secretary for one year at Archwood School where I have such happy memories. After we moved to North Carolina, we still kept in touch and even met up with Lorne & family in Atlanta one time. Then we moved to Michigan where we kept in touch by letter, by phone and visits from Lorne & family on their way through Michigan and our few visits back to Winnipeg. We were especially happy to have last seen Lorne & Irene just last Fall - what a fun reunion we had with them, and other mutual friends. We will miss Lorne - he was a wonderful, kind and nice person - a very caring and happy person and a good friend to all who were lucky enough to know him. As an ex-student of Mr. Ferley I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing & I offer my sincerest condolences to his family. I'm well into my mid-60s living far away in Europe since the 1980s. After all these years I remember less teachers than the number of fingers on one hand. Mr. Ferley is one of them. He obviously did many many things right to be held in such high esteem by so many of his ex-students. His being remembered by so many who are not family is an enormous tribute & one he earned & deserves. - Posted by: Raymond de Montigny (Ex-Nelson Mac Student) on: Mar 30, 2014

Lorne was a good friend of my stepfather Ralph Sotolov. They both worked in education, and were breakfast and coffee regulars who shared many good times together for years. For years he provided my children with hand picked beautiful pumpkins for Halloween. He was such a kind man. He will be deeply missed. Mr. Ferley was my Home Room teacher in Grade 10 and he made us all feel at ease, starting high school. I lived on St. Catherine's Street and would wait for the bus on the corner at Archibald and whenever he saw me waiting for the bus, he would pick me up in his Edsel and give me a ride to school - after first stopping at Canada Packers to get his biology "supplies". We would pick up other kids on the way so there would be a carload of kids arriving at Nelson Mac! Not sure if that would fly nowadays! Mr. Ferley was a lovely person and I will always remember him with fondness. My condolences to his family - Posted by: Carlyne Murphy (née Franks) (Former student) on: Mar 30, 2014

Lorne is one of my personal all time favourite persons. He was the best, most practical and down to earth teachers that I had during my days at Nelson McIntyre Collegiate. Mr. Ferley always understood that "his students must feel that he cared about us as people first... before we would care for what he would then share with us". As I grew into adulthood I held Lorne in high esteem as an example of what the ultimate community-minded and family man should and could be. He simply loved and had great faith in people and we in turn loved him back. - Posted by: Rick Lambert (Former student ) on: Mar 29, 2014

I am saddened to hear of Mr. Feley's death. I went to Nelson Mac while he was a teacher there (graduating in 1973) and although I never had any classes with him, I would often see him going down the halls with a smile on his face and exchanging greetings for any students that he saw. He was the kind of guy that a person would like to be neighbors with. RIP sir! - Posted by: Pat (Rick) Law (Former student) on: Mar 29, 2014

Mr. Ferley was a teacher of mine at Nelson MacIntyre Collegiate. As a student, I was a challenge, but he always remained the same. He was kind and patient and had a good sense of humor. He was also a good teacher even for someone like me who didn't much care for learning. May he rest in peace and may God grant comfort to his loved ones. - Posted by: Christine Suderman nee Schulz (Student) on: Mar 29, 2014

Mr. Ferley was a huge force in all the students he taught. One of a kind, so caring, so knowledgeable, and willingly shared his love of teaching. A great mentor with a keen insight; he always knew the answers to our questions and problems. His merry band, the SouthGlen Fiddlers played at my mother's 90th birthday party at Catherine Place and what a fun nite that was. I was so looking forward to seeing him at Nelson Mac's 100th Anniversary/Reunion Party; now, he will be with us in spirit and we will have many toasts to him. He will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Linda Broeska Lane (Former Student, NMC) on: Mar 29, 2014

When I first met Lorne Ferley around 1969, he taught Biology me at NMC. Two years after I graduated high school,I received a phone call from him, TELLING me I was going to get involved in the first reunion of NMC in 1975. I had no choice in the matter, so I automatically said, YES MR FERLEY! Thanks to this man who GOT THINGS DONE, I've been running the Alumni Association now for almost 40 years!
