EVELYN PORTH It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Evelyn Porth on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at The Maples Personal Care Home surrounded by family. Evelyn was born on July 25, 1931 to Henry and Nancy Anderson. She grew up at Loon Straits, then married Jack Porth and lived first at Bullhead and later at Pine Dock where they raised 12 children. She was predeceased by her two brothers Walter and Johnny Anderson, her son Jack Porth Jr. and grandsons Bruce Johnson and Kelvin Porth. She is survived by 11 children: Linda, Carole (Leonard), Lois (Merv), Lorraine (Johnnie), Dale (Kim), Dennis (Janice), Conrad (Denise), Bobby, Gerry, Larry (Tammy) and Harvey (Debbie), grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter, sisters Dorothy, Joan (Johnny) and Myrtle, nephews and nieces too numerous to mention. Mom was an excellent housekeeper and cook perogies and bannock were her specialties. Nobody left her house without a care package. She enjoyed knitting socks and mitts for family and friends and also for the Christmas Cheer Board. Until health problems forced her to slow down she was a very active person, always on the go. It was hard to track her down. Bingo and dancing were among her favourite activities - she loved to dance and she was a great dancer. She worked for Home Care for several years and developed friendships with many of her Clients that lasted long after her retirement. She has resided at the Maples Personal Care Home since June 2008, where she kept busy with all the activities, such as crafts, cooking and her favourite, Bingo. Until recently she also enjoyed Happy Hour on Friday afternoon with her friends. She will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends. Prayers Services will be held on Wednesday, April 2, at 7:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, April 4, at 1:00 p.m. in the Pine Dock Community Hall. The family would like to thank the staff at the Maples Care Home for caring for Mom especially in the last few months. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

Condolences & Memories (14 entries)

  • My gran was one of a kind, an amazing woman with inner beauty that was immeasurable. I learned a lot from her; cleanliness is next to godliness, appearences are important - self and clean tidy house, a woman must know how to cook a great meal even on a tight budget. For all that I am forever grateful. The most vivid memory with gran is when one of her homecare clients (turned lifelong friend) was at the HSC on her last breath, for some reason gran took me with her to see her and say her goodbyes. I saw in gran that day such empathy and love for a dying friend, something I'll never forget. Today my only regret is that I wasn't right there holding gran's hand as she crossed over, but I know she understands why. I'll always love you grandma, to the moon. - Posted by: Sharla (Grand daughter) on: Jan 19, 2015

  • My sincere condolences to all the Porth family on the loss of your Mom Evelyn. Bless her dear heart. What a great wonderful, always jolly, fun-loving lady! When she came to the Sunshine Coast, BC for a visit with Dale & Larry, I think we laughed and danced for 3 days straight!and did we ever have good times! (each time she came to visit!). You could not help but have a great, and enjoyable jolly good time with Evelyn, at any time (when you come from Riverton and areas all around there, no one would even notice when 2 ladies danced with each other!). That is just the way we were all brought up. I will never forget her, & all the good times we spent together. Evelyn will be dearly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. (my grand-daughter Jesse Lee Porth,is named after Evelyn's mother-in-law Jesse Porth). Love to all the Porth family. Love Ethel - Posted by: Ethel Bergen (Friend) on: Apr 05, 2014

  • Auntie Evelyn and I had a very unique relationship. I make a combination of her and Elsie Monkman's bannock but I still can't pull it off. I'll always remember her when I make bannock, especially when my nephew Darren's in town and we take it down to the Salvation Army. Wouldn't she love that?!I always called her on her birthday (same day as Art) and if I was near her place I'd stop in and give her a couple of bucks towards her bingo kitty. I loved it when Harvey was there because he made her laugh and she loved her baby so much. My deepest condolences to my Porth cousins. She's resting in peace but mourning the loss of a Mother is one of the hardest things we'll ever deal with in life. Love you all. - Posted by: Grace Forbister (niece) on: Apr 03, 2014

  • Sincere condolences to all the family, relatives and friends of Evelyn. The first time I took my wife Patti to Winnipeg, back in the 90's, she and Evelyn hit it off immediately. They both loved bingo and that is what they did together, the first time they met. We will all miss her very much. - Posted by: Chuck Makara (First Cousin) on: Mar 31, 2014

  • My condolences to the Porth family at the loss of their Mom. I remember Evelyn in Riverton, always busy in her kitchen, baking and cooking and chasing her boys in the summer trying to get them to go to the Kids Bible Study/Sunday School classes at Engimyra. She was a wonderful lady and she will be deeply missed. My thoughts and prayers to all of you at this difficult time. • Auntie you were truly an amazing woman:) I could only wish to be the same:) I will always cherish the memories we shared, like your yummy baking you had every time we came to visit you when I was a kid:) and the times you and granny would be driving around the city embarassing us, like when granny went down a one way street and cars were honking at us and you and granny were giving them the middle finger! lol I still laugh about that 20+ years later:) Thanks for all the memories Auntie:) XO RIP Dear Auntie Evelyn - Posted by: Kendra (Great Neice ) on: Mar 31, 2014

  • Rest in Peace! Condolences to all my cousins! - Posted by: Terry Bruce (Cousin) on: Mar 31, 2014

  • I will never forget when grandma gave me an older style orange and white plastic rolling pin, and on one end, you could unscrew it and fill it with water. Grandma said, "See, you just fill it with water on this end, and then freeze it. And if that guy doesn't listen to you, you pull it out of the freezer, and take care of him!" I laughed so hard, because I really wasn't expecting her to say that. That was one of the things I will always remember about Grandma, she would say some really funny stuff, when no one was expecting it. - Posted by: Kristina Jonasson (Grandaughter) on: Mar 30, 2014

  • Evelyn, I will never forget your laugh or when you & Mom were together - forever giggling!! I will miss your kindness, as I miss my own Mother. Thank you for being there for everyone!! God Bless ! - Posted by: Karen (friend) on: Mar 29, 2014

  • My Auntie Evelyn was a kind and generous woman. She loved life. Her house was always spotless. So much so that it's worth mentioning here. We cannot forget, that having such a clean house was amazing, because she had twelve kids. She breast-fed her kids and still managed to make excellent meals, keep her house clean and have a big smile on her face. I remember seeing her whole kitchen table covered with loaves of fresh bread. She cooked wild duck better than anyone. My son called her Auntie Lovin'. She would laugh at him because he was such a brat. She loved my kids and all the others. She was always happy to see me and I was happy to see her. Peace and love to her now. - Posted by: Connie Forbister (Neice) on: Mar 29, 2014
