WM. JOHN BREWSTER August 1, 1942 - April 3, 2014 Sadly the family announces the peaceful passing of John Brewster at St. Boniface Hospital. John was predeceased by his parents Arthur and Mary Brewster, brothers-in-law Clare Swanson and Barry Moolchan. John is survived by his wife Linda, of 48 years; children Sean (Caroline), Pamela (Butch), David (Monique); grandchildren Wyatt and Evan Brewster, Samantha, Ashley, Katrina, Nicole Tweedy, Jennifer, Danielle and Tori Duncan; three sisters, Elizabeth (Bill) Derksen, Irene (Richard) Schellenberg, Heather Swanson, and brother Lloyd (Dianne) Brewster as well as sister-in-law Sharon Moolchan (Rutherford), brother-in-law Larry (Wendy) Rutherford, and numerous nieces and nephews. John was born in Treherne, MB August 1, 1942, living there until he was 13 years old. When he became an adult he went to Calgary and worked on a ranch. Over the years he worked at many jobs - all hard work. Some were in Calgary, Saskatoon and Winnipeg. These varied from building hydro line towers, running a sign company, operating his own garages, long distance trucking from Montreal to Vancouver and finally for City of Winnipeg Parks and Recreation Department until 1999. In his younger years he excelled at hockey - in 1962 he made the Flin Flin Bomber hockey team. On the return from Flin Flon he played for several teams in Southwest Manitoba. When his son began playing hockey he turned to coaching and later drove Sean many miles to watch him play. John coached Pam in her ringette, he always enjoyed watching anyone he had coached as they matured. He followed both children as they played baseball - his lawn chair and umbrella at the sidelines. His last joy was in 2013 watching Sean and Pam play in their baseball finals. John often said he had a full life in which he got to do all the things he wanted. His one regret was not going to his NHL tryout with Minnesota. John's love and joy were his children and grandchildren - his eyes lit up when they came over and he enjoyed watching their games. Even in later years he had suggestions to offer. The family would like to thank St. Boniface Hospital 7A West staff and Dr. Yaffe for the excellent care John received over the last three months, Dr. Husarewcz for his care over the years, and to the home care staff that came to his home. Friends and family are invited to come together to remember John in celebration at Wheeler Funeral Home, 1800 Day Street, April 13, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Instead of flowers, donations can be sent to St. Boniface Hospital and Research Foundation or Manitoba Multiple Sclerosis Society. Dear Linda and family. I was so sorry to hear about John passing away. I am sending you and your family my deepest sympathy and a great big hug going out to you. We had many good jokes during his stay when he was at Concordia Hospital a couple years ago and some reminiscing when I bumped into you two having a night out at the casino. John loved that and happier than anyone I knew with a 20 buck win. I hope to see you soon back at work occasionally real soon. Take care Bev - Posted by: Bev Frankfurt (Friend ) on: Apr 24, 2014

Linda, we did not know John that well. However, when I was looking through some photos of your retirement dinner, you could see how much love there was for you, the kids, the grandkids and all of the extended family. I still can see John as he came across the dance hall to ask me for a dance in Holland at the Boxing Day dance in 1960. Who would have believed we would celebrate our 48th anniversary? It is so touching to read everyone's memories of him. Sad though that he isn't to hear them. Thanks for the messages. Vcterq - Posted by: linda brewster (spouse) on: Apr 09, 2014

Deepest sympathy extended to Linda, Sean, Pam and families. My memories of John extend back to the days when he played for the Holland Rockets. John, his infectious laughter and elaborate stories were all larger than life itself. John was quite a character who will be missed by those who knew him. Cherish the memories, hold them dear to your heart, let the healing begin. - Posted by: Doug De Graeve (family friend) on: Apr 08, 2014

Linda and Family - sorry to hear of your loss. I remember watching a Rocket game John was playing back in the 60's - Puck went over the boards and I took it in the face and was bleeding profusely - John grabbed me up and skated across the ice carrying me over to Dad who took me to Doc O's for repair. Another time in the Holland Rink - remember John playing with the Holland B's against Cypress River - John didn't like a Ref's call and he chased him one full lap around the rink - don't think he caught him - but that was who John was! In researching my great-grandmother's background I found that the Robert Brewsters and the Harriet Rannards had adjoining homesteads. My grandfather Charles F. Rannard's brother John, then 24 years of age, helped Robert Brewster build his 1st home on the property. Harriet's children and Robert's children maintained a lasting relationship and visited and corresponded over the years. In my genealogical searches, I have become friends with the Brewster/Triggs descendants, Pearl Nadine Dobbin and Linda and Ted Van de Kerckhove. Our condolences and sympathies go out to all the relatives on the loss of John Brewster. - Posted by: C. David Rannard (Our Great Grandparents had adjacent homesteads in Treherne in 1880) on: Apr 07, 2014

My deepest sympathy to Mrs. Brewster and family & Pam and family. I played ball for many years with Pam when we were young and next to my parents, Mr. Brewster was always my biggest supporter. I can still hear him asking me before every game if "I have my fast shoes on" and calling me "speedy". Now my own daughter gets called "Speedy" and every time I hear it I smile and think of him. He could always make us laugh!! Thanks for always cheering me on Mr. Brewster! May you rest in peace. - Posted by: Kristine (Rayner) Fourneaux (Childhood friend of Pam) on: Apr 07, 2014

Linda & Family Please accept our heartfelt condolences on the loss of your loved one John. In 1987 we purchased our home at 521 Ravelston and soon after were introduced to Linda & John as our new neighbors. John was always a cheerful person and loved tinkering in the garage on vehicles. I enjoyed crossing the back lane and having coffee and joking around. John was always proud of his children. You could see it in his eyes when he spoke fondly of them. When we moved away in 1992 we did cross paths at the mall and shared a nice hello to catch up on things. John rest your soul. You have gone to a better place. Even though you have left us we will all fondly remember you and your smile. Rest in peace good buddy. Mr Brewster! He coached me in ringette a lot of my years. He was a tough, disciplined coach who dedicated so much of his time to his kids and the kids he coached in sports. We always loved some of the drills he came up with, especially the one where he had us all lay our ringette sticks around the middle circle and we had to run around the circle while hoping over the sticks! He always encouraged us and made great AA players out of us! Growing up with Pam I also got to see the softer side of Mr. Brewster, little Pammy was the apple of his eye. Times I will never forget. I am blessed to have been a part of your lives growing up and still to this day. He will be missed but never forgotten. - Posted by: Carrie (Fudge) Kull (Family Friend ) on: Apr 05, 2014
