MICHAEL KARATCHUK In the early morning of April 1, 2014 with family by his side, our dad Michael Karatchuk was called by our heavenly father to join his family. He was greeted by our grandparents, our mom Julie; our brother Ryan and sister Evelyn. He joins his brother John (Mary) and sisters Nettie (Steve) and Mary (John). He leaves to cherish his memory his son Daryl (Julie); daughters Elaine and Linda; grandchildren Miranda, Michaela, Ryann, Bobby, Cheryl, William and Jerry; his brother Bill (Barbara); numerous nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren. Dad was born in Riverton on December 10, 1927 to Bill and Anna Karatchuk. Growing up in the 1930s was difficult but dad had many wonderful memories to share with us. As a shy yet inquisitive child, he was forever taking things apart to see how they worked. In his early teens, dad joined his brothers in commercial fishing on Lake Winnipeg. He shared many stories with us about the hard work, little pay, and always wanting to set one last net. In 1950, dad met and later married our mom Julie. They started a family and he decided to find work outside of the fishing industry. This led to employment with the construction company under contract to build the Manitoba Hydro Selkirk Generating Station and a move from Riverton to East Selkirk. With construction complete in 1960, dad retained employment with Manitoba Hydro in Selkirk and continued a dedicated and lifelong career until his retirement in 1993. Dad's love and commitment for his family was unsurpassed. He had a vibrant passion for gardening, growing so many beautiful flowers and the largest beets ever seen. Concerning animals, dad had a soft spot. Rescuing and sheltering many cats, dogs, birds and squirrels. They were all precious in his eyes. As children, we fondly remember waving goodbye to dad as he went off to work. As we got older the tradition was post it notes left behind conveying our love. The family circle may be broken, but the strength of love and family he bestowed upon us will remain until we are together again. Please Lord, continue to watch over our dad as this is the farthest he's been away from home. A Celebration of dad's life will be held at Gilbart Funeral Home in Selkirk, MB, on Monday, April 7, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Brad Elliott officiating. A viewing to be held one hour prior to the service. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mike's memory to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 0R3. I have very fond memories of playing with my cousins in their back yard. My condolences to all of the family. I am very sorry that I was not able to be there. Living in Alberta makes it difficult. But one good story I can tell is that when Uncle Mike was living at my Baba Obirek's house when he first started working at the Steam plant in East Selkirk, he actually helped my Mom to sew by teaching her what the grain of fabric was, because he was familiar with the grain of wood which is just like fabric. Straight of grain is the same for wood or fabric. This was a story that my Mom was very proud of telling that her Uncle helped her to learn to sew. The story has passed onto me, as I have been sewing since I was 4 years old. To Linda, Elaine, Darryl, I know you will all miss him dearly. He was an awesome man, and uncle. - Posted by: Linda Hoydalo (cousin) on: Apr 07, 2014
