HAROLD DAVID THORARINSON With great sadness we announce the passing of Harold David Thorarinson on Friday, April 4, 2014 at the age of 76 years. He was predeceased by his parents Anna and Kristjan Thorarinson as well as his brother Kristjan (Buddy), sister-in-law Irene, and nephew Kenneth. He will be lovingly remembered by his children Stacey (Ove) and David (Kelly) and grandchildren Christopher, Michael, Matthew and Shanyn; brother Brian (Lyla); sister Lorraine (Garnet), along with numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. Dad was born on December 1, 1937 and grew up in Riverton, Manitoba. As a young boy, living above his parents' store on Main Street, he had many tales of adventure roaming around the town. Once old enough to work Dad was a big part of the family business, and through the years helped with the logging operations as well as building the new Thorarinson Store. Dad was a hard worker who loved to try and figure out a better way to do things (which he would explain to us in great detail!). He was very entrepreneurial and established several businesses including an excavation and construction co., office rental, house building, and land developing to name a few. Some shorter lived forays included Lake Winnipeg navigation buoy contracts, and our favourite...auction buying and selling! We never knew what Dad would show up with, we always laughed (later) recalling rental boats bought from a bankrupt marina, or the large industrial machine, whose purpose was a mystery to the family. Dad was a very kind hearted man, was always upbeat and positive, and generous right until the end. He loved his family and was a proud grandfather. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the medical staff at St. Boniface Hospital, including the Emergency, Hemodialysis, and Cardiac Departments. At Dad's request there will be no funeral service. A private interment will take place at a later date. If family or friends desire, donations can be made to the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation, Dialysis Unit Fund. "Better to fail than not try." Les & I always enjoyed having Harold stop in for a visit and a cup of coffee. The last few years not so often and we missed him. We never solved all the problems of the world but it was not from lack of discussion! He called us in December and I had a long visit with him and he sounded so good! Then he talked to Les and Jonas and Brad. Between us we must have visited for 2 hours and it was SO GOOD to talk to him. We will miss him!! He was a good cousin and a GOOD FRIEND!! - Posted by: Sonja Kornik (Cousin) on: Apr 10, 2014

It was always a delight to hear Harold's stories and his old school approach to any challenges. He was a CAN-DO Man and believed there was always a way, even in the most impossible situations. It was no surprise that Harold could pretty much give you advice on any level from construction to politics. He always had something special to offer. He will be sadly missed by us all but his life stories will never be forgotten. To Harold... THE CAN-DO MAN! God Bless you and give you peace.
