JOHNNY (JOHN) KOSTIUK After a brief illness, it is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Johnny on Saturday, April 5, 2014, with his family by his side. Johnny leaves to mourn and cherish his memory: sister, Marie Kostiuk; brother-in-law, Orest Shindruk; nieces, Sherry Shindruk (Kelly Chidlow) and Laura Catellier (Clayton); great- nephews, Brant, Nick and Max; relatives and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Nick and Rose Kostiuk; sister, Annette Shindruk, and nephew, Kevin Shindruk. Johnny was born on September 3, 1954 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He grew up in East St. Paul and graduated from Miles Macdonell Collegiate. After graduation Johnny worked various jobs before landing a position with Fort Garry Industries, which was the beginning of his career. At the age of 24, he was offered a transfer to Calgary. With the hopes of better employment opportunities, Johnny accepted this offer and began his new life in Calgary. In his 35 year career in the oil field service industry he held many positions and was very well respected in his field of work, so much that it allowed him to travel outside the country working for a brief period in Cuba. Johnny had a love for golf and NASCAR. He had a standing weekend tee time of 9:56 a.m. He organized many golf trips - the most memorable being the boys' annual Kokanee Springs golf tournament in British Columbia. Johnny also traveled down to Las Vegas every March and October to see the NASCAR races. Johnny developed many good and loyal friends over the years, all of whom will sadly miss him. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all his Calgary friends for helping Johnny get home to Winnipeg to his family. We would also like to thank the staff at Victoria and Concordia Hospitals for their care of Johnny. Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. Divine Liturgy will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 11 at St. Andrew's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 160 Euclid Avenue with Fr. Len Ratushniak, C.Ss.R. officiating. Interment to follow in All Saints Cemetery. He will be forever loved and always missed by his family and friends. VICHNAYA PAMYAT Memory Eternal KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 204-956-2193

  • I only knew John for a few years but a great guy with a good sense of humor. He was known as the candyman as he always had candy in his office. It is a pleasure to have known Johnny. My deepest condolences to the family, he will be missed. - Posted by: Shawn Stoddart (Former Co-worker) on: Apr 09, 2014

  • John was a good friend and always made sure we had our standing Tee time every weekend. Chris helped John move from Applewood to Cranston and unfortunately helped pack to send him home and get his house ready to sell. We helped him pick out carpet, paint colors, kitchen cabinets, lino and tiles, trees and plants for his yard. He was still working on his yard to get it just perfect to enjoy. He helped us drywall our basement and build our deck. He was always there to help. He would give Chris the shirt off his back and actually did – pinks, oranges, greens were just some of the colors Chris will try and pull off as Chris is very conservative. He was ultra-serious on the golf course and if anyone made a sound while he was on the tee there would be a glare which of course made everyone chuckle. One of the things that was funny is – he would walk up to the tee box without his club, take a look then go back to get his club – now this might seem normal but the thing was he played these holes weekly so he should have had a really good idea what to use its not like the holes changed…that was just one of the little quirks we loved about him…He will be missed…it will not be the same… I am sure he will be watching us on the golf course…Our hearts are with him and his family. - Posted by: Chris and Valerie Hak (Friends) on: Apr 09, 2014
