SISTER KATHERINE MARIANNA BOECHLER RNDM Sister Katherine Boechler RNDM, former resident of St. Benedict's Place, died peacefully on April 11, 2014. Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, Frank F. Boechler and Katherine Selzler, and by her siblings, Frank L., Kasper, Gregory, Charles, Anton, Erwin, Sr. Magdalina OSU, Sr. Clara OSU, Sr. Regina Anne RNDM, and Annie Dukart. Katherine is survived by her brothers Wilfred (Marilyn), Alphonse (Rose), her sister Brunhilda (Jack) Sander, sister-in-law Teresa, and numerous nieces and nephews. Born August 16, 1917 in Allan SK, Katherine grew up in a large and caring family on the Saskatchewan prairies near Allan. In 1941, she entered the novitiate of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions (RNDM) at Sacred Heart College in Regina, SK, making her first vows in 1944. In 1948 Sr. Katherine was missioned to India, and made her perpetual vows on July 26, 1950 in Chittagong, in what was then East Pakistan. Sr. Katherine served as an educator and an administrator in the volatile situations just after the partitioning of India, the formation of East Pakistan, and the eventual creation of Bangladesh. To this day, she is greatly appreciated by the Sisters in Bangladesh as a courageous and visionary woman. Returning to Canada in 1969, Katherine attended Teachers College in Brandon, MB, and where her academic and practice teaching records were exceptional. On completion of her certification in Education, she began teaching kindergarten at St. Edward's school in Winnipeg. Katherine enjoyed teaching and loved her students. She had the capacity to evoke a sense of wonder and love of learning in her young students. Katherine retired from classroom teaching in 1987, and then extended her involvements with refugees and migrants. She had a special care for those who had been forced to flee their homelands, for those made poor, and those who struggled for basic human rights. She taught English to those who had come to Canada from other countries, and did all she could to help them feel welcome in their new country. The Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions and the Boechler family are most grateful to the Sisters and staff at St. Benedict's place for the many kindnesses they extended to Katherine in the seven years she was a resident with them. They are also grateful to the staff at Concordia Hospital and Beacon Hill Lodge for their competence and kindness to Katherine in the brief time she spent in their care. The Mass of the Resurrection, will be celebrated at St. Benedict's Monastery, 225 Masters Avenue, Winnipeg on Tuesday, April 15 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Msgr. Louis McClosky as main celebrant. Wake/Prayers will precede the Eucharist from 10:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Interment will be at Assumption cemetery in Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, friends may wish to make a donation to the Mission Fund of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions, 310 Provencher Blvd., Winnipeg, MB R2H 0G7. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 204-586-8044

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Dear Sister Katherine; You meant the world to me. Everyone needs to have favorite people and you were always my favorite. Whether it was when I was little and you didn't know your colors, or the hours we spent together at Grandma's house, shopping with Celena and I at Midtown Plaza or the many other things we did together. You were the most fun Aunt ever. And then there was this whole other amazing life that you had overseas before I was even born. I always thought I was so incredibly blessed that I was born in just the right time, just after you got back from India, and just the right place, spending so much time with my Grandma, to get to know you so very well. My life would have been very different without you in it. I love you. Your niece Juanita - Posted by: Juanita Vogelgesang (niece) on: Apr 30, 2014

  • Dear Sister Catherine, I didn't get to know you until you came back from India. You were this elusive person living in another strange country. When you came back from India, your stories intrigued me, even though I was only a child. How we laughed at the "Zoom, Gallie, Gallie, Gallie, Zoom Gallie, Gallie" trick of dad's (Wilfred). Later, you tried to get me to join your order...but alas, it was not meant to be. I loved spending those nights with you at Aunt Annie's house, when you were visiting all of us in Allan. I'll never forget shelling peas with you in your housecoat, the "bun cutting" teasing we shared, or the McGavin's breadbag jokes!! You meant so much to me in so many ways. What would I have done without you when mom died? You helped me be the Kindergarten teacher, and now the EAL teacher that I am. I'll never forget all the times we spent together and especially the trip to Spearfish, the caverns, the Passion Play, and the Badlands of North Dakota with dad, Sister Regina Anne, and aunt Hilda. Those were special times indeed!! I know you're in a good place...the place you've waited for all your life. I can't wait to see you again and share more laughs. With all my love, Ruth - Posted by: Ruth Boechler (McCuaig) Brown (niece) on: Apr 23, 2014

  • I think a lot of us have always been in awe of Sister Katherine as well as her three other “Sisters”. Her energy was contagious and her hope always strong, a woman of profound faith blessed with a sense of playfulness somehow balanced with an undeniable compassion. You have always been here for us, and of course others, an inspiration, giving. A Super Sister Auntie with a cape, world travelled. I feel so honoured and fortunate to have been touched by your presence, and it continues even after you have gone.
