ANNE MARYK (nee DANCHUK) 1918 2014 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Anne Maryk on April 12, 2014 at the age of 95 at her daughter's home in Winnipeg with her family at her side. Anne is survived by her daughter Georgina Smith (Dave); grandchildren Wayne Smith (Jacquie), Debbie Dierckens (Mike), and Judy Helbig, and seven great-grandchildren, Laura Parent (Corey), Lisa and Sara Smith, Daryl and Karl Dierckens and Logan and Quinn Helbig, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, George; her sisters Violet Kalansky (Peter), Sophie Mallon (Jack); her brother John Danchuk (Helen) and her special niece Pat Gow (Blake). Anne was born and educated in the Elmwood area of Winnipeg where she lived until her marriage to George in 1938. Following high school she was primarily occupied serving as housekeeper/guardian looking after her infant niece Pat and her brother who was stricken with MS as her parents and sisters were all fully employed outside the home. Anne was an avid sports fan, actively involved in the bowling circuit in the 1940/1950s and was an accomplished bowler, winning a trophy in the City of Winnipeg tournament. Anne and George were both avid fishermen and spent many enjoyable times fishing the Winnipeg River system and particularly the Bird River area. In 1955 they moved to Bird River where they already had a private cottage and established Tall Timber Lodge as well as numerous fly-in fishing camps during the years that followed. Anne was actively involved in the operation of the business for 35 years, serving primarily as cook, dispatcher, bookkeeper, treasurer and storekeeper until their retirement in 1990, following which they moved to Winnipeg. In recent years Anne has lived in an assisted living facility but has always kept busy with hobbies, following several sports, playing cards (a Gold Medal winner in a Senior's cribbage tournament) and bingo, going on casino runs as well as spending several days of the summer months at Tall Timber with her family where she and Gina cooked special treats endlessly. Despite a number of serious health issues encountered over the past several years, including being a breast cancer survivor since 1976, Anne seldom complained and was always a very thoughtful and compassionate person as evidenced by the close friendships maintained with several former employees, particularly Art Ganchow (Joyce) and Murray Smith, as well as customers over her many years since retirement. She will be greatly missed by family and friends. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, l442 Main Street, Winnipeg. A private family burial will take place at a later date. The family would like to thank Dr. Pat Harris and the Palliative Care Unit for their compassionate care and assistance. Special thanks also to Rev. Fr. Gene Maximiuk of the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral for visiting Anne at home last week and for conducting the upcoming service. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Anne's memory to the Canadian Cancer Society. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 204-586-8044
