JEAN HARNETT Jean Harnett (nee Blazina) passed away peacefully, surrounded by the fierce love of her family, on Tuesday, April 15, 2014. Born in Port Arthur, Ontario on April 11, 1936, Jean's 78 years were fearless and focused on boundless love and compassion. After marrying Mel, the love of her life, in 1956, Jean and Mel made homes in Port Arthur, Toronto and Winnipeg where, in each location, they created rich networks of lifelong friends. Jean and Mel were bound together by their focus on building a family foundation that is unbreakable and as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother (Brodie, Eric, Skylar, Carter, Olivia), great-grandmother (Riley Mae), aunt and dear friend, Jean shaped all of our lives in ways we have yet to comprehend. The qualities that Jean possessed that made her a light in so many lives and will be painfully missed, but will live on in all who had the good fortune to know her beautiful heart and soul. The family and many friends she leaves are deeply saddened but are strengthened yet again by our memory of her life so elegantly lived and by how we will spend the rest of each of our lives being grateful for her love. Mel, Michele and her husband Paul, Nicole, and Curt and his wife Victoria and their families are currently celebrating Jean's life together at the family home in Winnipeg. A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, April 19, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. Interment will take place at a later date at Riverside Cemetery in Thunder Bay, ON. She will be laid to rest close to the heart of her dearly missed mother following a memorial service. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favourite charity in mom's honour. Condolences & Memories (22 entries)

  • Michele it gives me great sorrow to learn that your mom has passed away. She was a beautiful person. I will always remember the times like when we were driving back from Teulon late at night. Everyone in the car was asleep except your mom and I was supposed to keep her awake because she was driving and we ended up talking about life all the way home, dying her hair in the kitchen with the neighbour, (at first I did not know what she was doing) and those late night grilled cheese sandwiches were the best. She had this way of making you feel warm and special. I will never forget that. My heart and prayers go out to you and your family. • My two daughters and I were lucky enough to spend 13 years of our lives with Jean as our wonderful, warm, supportive and joyful neighbor and friend. The girls loved to visit Jean and always came home with a bright smile, a lovely story to tell (and a sweet treat to enjoy!)Even more interesting was our cairn terrier's complete and loyal devotion to Jean. For ten years Howie would watch under the gate to wait for Jean to arrive home if she was out with Mel. If he was invited over with the girls he would run straight into her house, then come back home, tail wagging, with a dog treat tied to his collar. He watched her house out of our window everyday and would perk up with excitement whenever she appeared. Jean was dearly loved by all of us, and it is a true testament to her beautiful generosity of spirit that our dog was equally smitten with her. We will always treasure our wonderful memories spending time with Jean. - Posted by: Wendy, Sophie and Grace, Howie and Willie () on: Apr 30, 2014

  • Dear Paul & Michele: We are very sorry to read about your mom's passing Michele. We just wanted to let you know we are thinking of you and your family. Having lost my stepmother and my dad in this last year and a half I know it is a very sad time. We hope you are doing okay. - Posted by: Sheree & Toby Kukko () on: Apr 25, 2014

  • The Harnetts moved to Winnipeg in early 70s. My family moved there in 1969 from Thunder Bay. Since Mr. and Mrs. Harnett were long time friends of my parents, Bill and Inga Vantour, I got to meet them and Michelle and Nicole and Curt. Mrs. Harnett was always so kind and friendly and happy and welcoming. My condolences to Mr. Harnett, Michelle, Nicole and Curt. My thoughts and prayers go out to you. • If one had to pick a word to describe Jean, it would be - CLASS. I've had the honour and privilege of knowing Jean for almost 45 years and always appreciated the close relationship both she and Mel have with my mother and late father. Truer friendships like this are rare and often envied. Our sincere condolences to Mel and family. Let's hope Jean is joining Don and Bev in setting the stage for the "Ugly Bug Ball - Part II". - Posted by: Doug Bayne and Family (friend ) on: Apr 22, 2014

  • During our Easter dinner the subject of cabbage rolls came up...the BEST cabbage rolls I have ever eaten were Jeans - none have come close to her recipe. Jean was such an inspiration in my life - I have only amazing memories of her and will always keep her close to my heart. I loved our times together with many Newcomer events and her visits to my nail salon in my home. She was a beautiful woman inside and out. - Posted by: Denise Fenwick (Friend (Newcomers)) on: Apr 21, 2014

  • I was extremely saddened to hear of Jeans passing. Although I lost contact with her after moving to Kelowna, she forever kept coming into my mind and heart. I've always loved her unconditional friendship, humour, and extreme warmth. I still laugh at a particular joke where Jean had me laugh until I cried, upon her sharing it at a newcomers party. God bless you Jean. Your memories will keep and hold your family with your spirit forever! Love Terri Knox. - Posted by: Terri Knox (Friend ) on: Apr 21, 2014

  • Such sadness to learn of the passing of Jean. Elsa and Jean were friends for over 60 years, from high school in Port Arthur. Elsa always said, that Jean Blazina was her best friend, ever. Although not always close geographically, they were always close. Jean was always in Elsa's thoughts. We both loved her, and will miss her greatly. Our deepest sympathy to Mel and the family. - Posted by: Patrick and Elsa Gamble (friends) on: Apr 17, 2014
