JACK ANTHONY STEWART KING
Born: Jul 15, 1946
Date of Passing: Apr 29, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJACK ANTHONY STEWART KING July 15, 1946 - April 29, 2014 The family of Jack King, with much sorrow, announces the death of a husband, father, brother, grandfather, friend to many and counselor to hundreds. Jack was predeceased by his parents Anthony and Ann, and in 2003 by his cherished brother Martin. He was loved, will be missed and remembered by his wife Lori Douglas, their son Stewart, his son Alexander (Nieves), grandchildren Lucia and Alistair, his daughter Victoria (Matt), brother Peter (Rose), sister Averil (Ray), and Alexander and Victoria's mother, Jennifer. Jack was born in England and raised in Rhodesia. He studied law in London, England and was admitted as a barrister to Gray's Inn. Jack, Jennifer, and Alexander moved to Winnipeg in 1979 to be closer to Jennifer's family. Jack was known as a hard-working lawyer. His skills as an advocate in Manitoba's courts were widely known and respected by many of his peers. He used his knowledge of literature and history in and outside of the courtroom to particular effect. Unlike some lawyers, Jack enjoyed litigating cases and often found himself taking over cases that other lawyers referred to him. His chosen area of specialty was family law. His family are grateful for the calls that have come in the last week from many of Jack's clients who remember the skill and commitment Jack put into their cases. After two decades practicing law with two of Winnipeg's largest law firms, Jack thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity in the last ten years to establish his own firm in partnership with Connie Petersen, where he spent many hours mentoring young lawyers pursuing careers in the practice of family law. Outside the practice of law Jack was a voracious reader, an avid and informed observer of current events who loved to converse and debate with friends over lunches and dinners. He never lost his passion for cricket, to the puzzlement and amusement of most native Winnipeggers. Jack was a devoted "parent" to a menagerie of dogs, cats and horses over the years. He loved the appearance each spring of daffodils which reminded him of England, to whose history, literature and legal legacy he had an unshakeable admiration. Jack was not without his faults. At times he could be sharp and acerbic in correspondence and in exchanges with opposing counsel. He was never shy in expressing his opinions and generally maintained a very stiff upper lip', British style' in the face of critics. Jack made mistakes. But when he did, he did not shirk from admitting them and apologizing. Jack's family, colleagues and friends know well the tremendous fortitude he showed through his last years during which time he continued to represent many who sought his counsel, notwithstanding the horrendous stress and pain that accompanied his last years, especially after becoming ill with cancer. The family will have a private memorial service on a date to be determined. "Now cracks a noble heart. Good night, sweet prince; And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!" Dear Lori and all family, I was stunned and broken hearted when I heard of Jack's passing over. Jack was a man of integrity, honesty, compassion and dedication. 'A Man's Man'...'He Walked With Kings and Never Lost The Common Touch'... Dear Lori, He mentored me, advised me, walked beside me while others ground me to the dust..Had he been my counsel from 'day 1' I would not today find myself in the position that I am in. He was not a man whom abided by 'injustice'...I miss him so terribly...His soul will never leave you... With Deepest Hearfelt Condolences ..You are in my thoughts and prayers... - Posted by: Linda Skinner (client) on: Jun 09, 2014

So sorry to hear of Jack's passing. Jack and Lori were wonderful mentors and friends to me when I was starting my legal career in Winnipeg. Over the years I've been privileged to work with many wonderful charismatic litigators, and Jack holds a special place on that list. My love to Lori and family. - Posted by: Heather Taylor (Former colleague) on: Jun 06, 2014

Jack and I became pen pals - no internet or Facebook back then - when he was at school in Zimbabwe and I was at school in England and then became best friends and companions when he came to London to study law. We had the same interests in literature, argued loudly about politics, and drank copious quantities of beer! And laughed! On the rare occasions we met after he went to Canada, we simply picked up where we had left off. He was a carbon copy of my father, his uncle, who was similarly belligerent and who Jack adored. Like his Uncle Douglas, also a lawyer, Jack was an individual and idiosyncratic voice - honest, straight and frequently anachronistic. Jack and I were twins in spirit, I loved him dearly and I will miss him beyond measure. - Posted by: Susie Gilchrist (Cousin) on: May 12, 2014
