DONALD SUTHERLAND ELLERBY April 22, 1930 - May 14, 2014 After a brief illness, Don passed away peacefully at the age of 84 years. He is survived by his sister Vivian (Bruce) Sinclair, sister-in-law Isabelle Ellerby, nieces and nephews Lorraine (Ron) Dacombe, Carolyn (Michael) Sinclair-Jarvis, Janet (Len) Dacombe, Lawrence (Brenda) Ellerby, Bill (Doris) Sinclair, Shauna Ellerby, Jonathan Ellerby and families, and many good friends. Don was predeceased by parents Chrissie and Harold Ellerby, twin brother Bill Ellerby and longtime companion Pat Montgomery. Don's charming and friendly manner and gift of remembering people's names served him well in life and in his career at Ellerby and Hall Chemists and then Shoppers Drug Mart until his retirement. Physical fitness was always very important to Don and he was a longtime active member of Winnipeg YMCA. He loved sports, from his football days at Gordon Bell High School to the University of BC football team, as well as skiing, cycling and canoeing with many close friends. During his time at UBC he developed a love of Vancouver and the West coast where he spent many enjoyable holidays with longtime friends, although always returning to his home which he affectionately dubbed "Winterpeg." Don had a generous nature and was an avid supporter of many charitable community activities including the Canadian Amateur Diving Association, the Bomber Booster Breakfasts and the Winnipeg Humane Society. He was a devoted dog lover and always had dog biscuits on hand to give to his many canine friends. The family would like to thank Dr. N. Lerner and the staff at the Misericordia Interim Care, Cornish 5, for their kind and compassionate care. Interment will take place on Thursday, May 22, at 11:00 a.m. at Brookside Cemetery, 3001 Notre Dame Ave., with a celebration of Don's life at 5:00 p.m. at the Misericordia Health Centre, 99 Cornish Ave., 7th floor Rooftop Garden. In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations may be made to Siloam Mission, the Winnipeg Humane Society or a charity of your choice. Cropo Funeral Chapel 204-586-8044

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I knew Don through working at Shoppers Drug Mart on Graham Avenue (Ellerby & Hall). Don would come in on Seniors Day to chat with all the customers. Everyone loved to see Don! Later on, when he couldn't come in to the store as much he would phone and give his credit card number to buy candy for the kids of staff that worked at the store. What a guy! So kind and generous. - Posted by: Angela () on: May 23, 2014

  • Condolences to Don's family. Many fond memories from Aubrey Street back in the 1930s. I used the F word one time and Don and Bill went and told my Mom. Probably resulted in a spanking from my Dad. Recall summer visits to Belly-Acres, our duck hunting spot near Libau, and diving off the bridge over Pruden's Creek and fun with canoes and harum scarum stuff. Remember the Ellerby household and always being welcome. A great family. All the better for the privilege of knowing them in those early years. - Posted by: Ed Melville (boyhood family friend) on: May 20, 2014

  • RIP Don. I will always remember Don as a friendly man and one who my Grandfather enjoyed talking to. He really looked after his elderly clients. - Posted by: Judy (Doran) Walton () on: May 17, 2014

  • I have known Don a number of years, I met Don through his best friend the late Dr. Lionel Israel's and Don would help me In the off. I worked for Ben-Gurion University and he would help with campaigns, we would go to lunch and just have a great old time. Don was a true Gentleman and a gentle man, he would laugh when I would make him put his leg up on a chair or call Lionel and he would make Son come over. When Don put up a fuss I would call my late husband Chuck and he would come and drive him, how Don laughed. I Am truly sorry due to ill health I was not able to be in touch with Don at the last but truly loved him like a brother.
