SOFIA WOWKOWYCH December 24, 1922 - May 14, 2014 Surrounded by her loving family, it is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Sofia, aged 91 years, on Wednesday, May 14, 2014. Sofia was predeceased by her loving husband Andreij in 2005 and her beloved son Michael in 2000. Left to honour her memory are her daughters, Bohdana (Terry) and Nadia (Roman); her much loved grandsons, Markian (Rochelle) and Nicholas (Karen), Andrew and John. Her great-grandchildren, Demyan and Victor, blessed her last years, and she had numerous relatives in Ukraine with whom she kept close contact. Sofia was born in Markopil, Western Ukraine and immigrated to Canada in 1948 where she married Andreij in 1949. Together they worked hard to build their life and raise a family in their new homeland. Mom greatly valued her Ukrainian heritage and traditions which she passed on to her family. She was well known for her baking, particularly the traditional wedding bread called Korovai, which graced many wedding tables. She enjoyed embroidery, sewing, gardening and spent many happy years at the family cottage (the beach.) Mom was always involved in the Ukrainian community and was an active participant in the UCWLC, Institute Prosvita and many church activities. We will miss her smile. Prayers will be sung 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 20 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 21 at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Sts. Volodymyr and Olha, 115 McGregor St. with Rt. Rev. Msgr. Mitrat M. Buyachok officiating. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sofia's memory may be made to a charity of one's choice. The family would like to thank Dr. Tatiana Panaskevich, Dr. Andrea Babick and the staff and Sisters at Holy Family Home for their compassion and tender care.
