CHARLES EDWARD (TED) LARUE It is with great sorrow that we announce that Charles Edward (Ted) LaRue passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Heritage Life Personal Care Home in Niverville, after a lengthy battle with cancer and a stroke. He was predeceased by his father Martin, mother Elsie, brother John, and sister-in-law Audrey. He will be sadly missed by his wife Aileen Patricia Charlotte, daughter Laurene Lyss (Vernon), sons Keith (Susanna), Tim (Darcene), Joe (Louise) and Todd, grandson Aaron Chanas-LaRue, granddaughters Erin Doty (Jake), Jessica Lyss and Rebecca Lyss, and great-granddaughters Charlotte, Molly and Violet Doty. Ted was born February 22, 1929 on Fleet Street in the family home. He learned the art of cake decorating from his grandfather who decorated cakes in England while dowager Queen Mary watched. He apprenticed as a chef at the Royal Alexandra Hotel, and was one of the cooks who cooked for Princess Elizabeth when she toured Canada in 1951. He also worked at the Banff Springs Hotel for a summer. He was the chef at the Town and Country in Winnipeg and cooked a banquet for Princess Alexandra. In between restaurants he worked for Burns Meats as a meat cutter. He met Pat at a party in 1951 and after three weeks proposed to her. They were married in June of 1952 and had four children of their own and 47 foster children over the years, one of whom (Joey) remained as part of the family and changed his name legally when he turned 18. Joey stole our hearts as a sickly infant, with his big brown eyes and happy smile. He had a breathing problem and needed special care. Dad saved his life with CPR on more than one occasion. Dad was an avid golfer, curler and bowler and won several championships. He loved taking home movies of family and friends. He was also an animal lover and bought five acres in 1972, when the family started raising St. Bernards along with many farm animals. Mom and Dad were founding members of the Saint Fanciers Club of Manitoba and Dad showed many Saints through to championships. After Laurie married, they sold the five acres, bought a larger place and added shelties to the family, one of which attained his obedience title with Dad's handling. Dad's love of children never changed and the thing that could brighten his face even during his illness was the sight of his great-granddaughters when they came to visit him at the home and in hospital. At his request, cremation has already taken place and a memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at Albright Church, 3400 DeVries, East St. Paul, Rev. Donald McKenzie of St. Phillips Anglican Church officiating. If desired, donations may be sent to CancerCare Manitoba or the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Fund in lieu of flowers. The family would like to thank Dr. Nasir and the staff of St. Pierre Hospital and the staff at Heritage Life Personal Care Home in Niverville for their devoted care over the last while. www.seasonsfunerals.ca
