HELEN SUTTON Helena (Helen) Ruth Rebecca Sutton (nee Broadfoot) born October 12, 1930 passed away peacefully May 16, 2014. Leaving to cherish her memories are her family: son Fred (Lynne), son Dan (Peggy), daughter Ruth (Bruce) Carter, grandchildren Stephanie Carter, Kelsey Carter, Stacey (Phil) Aubrey, Lindsay (Darcy) Catellier, great-grandchildren Erika, Kayla, Derek, Alexandria, Serena, Tristan, Jack, Thomas and Charlie, sister-in-laws Vi Broadfoot, Nina Broadfoot, Dorothy Irwin, numerous nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by her husband John (Jack) July 22, 2002, her brothers Pat, George, John Broadfoot, sister Alexandria, sister-in-laws Mary Carstens, Jenny Broadfoot and brother-in-laws John Carstens, Bob Irwin. Mom and Dad were married 53 years, residing on their farm outside of Warren, then moving into Stonewall Lions Manor, where Mom lived until recently. Mom was a worker, leaving school early to help her father in the Broadfoot General Store in Woodlands. Later, she also worked at the T & T General Store in Warren, ran the restaurant at the Woodlands Motor Hotel, and then cooked at the C & M Sporting Goods/Grant's Grill in Warren for many years. We were always amazed when she could eclipse how many hamburgers, bacon and eggs, etc. that she had cooked each day, and what the "regulars" always ordered. She was also known as the "Bun Lady" for her famous homemade buns and baking (especially butter tarts) that she sold at the Farmer's Market. Mom had many passions, Tuesday night bingos at Woodlands Hall, fishing and camping at Fairford River, playing cards with friends and family, and cheering on her favorite sports teams. Mom had been an active member of the WI in Warren and a regular of the Warren Curling Club. Mom also loved to knit and undertook in her later years to knit an afghan for each of her great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held on Monday, May 26, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the MacKenzie Funeral Home, Stonewall. Dr. Henry Ozirney will officiate. Thank you to the doctors and nurses at the Selkirk and Teulon hospitals, staff at Red River Place, Selkirk, and a big thank-you to the Homecare workers who enabled Mom to stay in her own home for the last three years. Cremation has taken place, internment of cremains to follow at Warren Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Woodlands Hall or New Life Church, Stonewall would be appreciated. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Helen and Jack were great people. My parents Joe and Rose McLeod camped at Fairford with them and we always had great times with them. We will always remember her great baking and all the fun we had. She always had great stories of her grandchildren to tell. She will be missed but always remembered. - Posted by: Faye McLeod-Jashyn (Friend) on: May 22, 2014

  • We are very honored to have known Helen (Grandma). Saving the special seat on Sunday morning was a private joke between us. She shared her "PINK SLICE" recipe and a few tricks to baking. We will miss the stories of days gone by. Her strength and courage to fight a hard battle with her health was just amazing. God looked around and saw you wanting to be with Jack.. Your body could not endure the pain anymore. Each breath became harder. We all knew the time for parting was near. The Lord called your name and carried you from our world to His. You will always be remembered. Thank-you to the family for sharing their Mother with us. May all the good memories be treasured. During this time of personal loss remember others care. You are not alone. - Posted by: Leonard & Josie Lindley (Friends) on: May 21, 2014

  • Our deepest sympathy to the Sutton family. Through many conversations, I was able to get through that tough shield, that Helen hid behind. When I did, I found a frail lady that had a very big heart. Her family was her priority. She loved them all dearly. She was a neighbour and friend for a very short time and will not be forgotten. - Posted by: Lou & Don Best (Neighbour ) on: May 20, 2014
